Effect of Method and Time of Grafting on Success, Survival and Growth of Indian Olive (elaeocarpus Floribundus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on method and time of grafting in Indian olive was conducted at HRC, BARI, Gazipur, during 2011-2012. There were three methods viz., cleft, splice and veneer, and four time viz., February, March, April and May. Significant variation among the treatment combinations was observed. Splice grafting at March showed earlier bud break (14.00 days) closely followed by splice at May (14.67 days), whereas veneer at April (35.39 days) showed delayed bud break. Cleft at May showed maximum success (75.00%) in 30 DAG and survivability in 60 DAG (68.33%) and in 90 DAG (63.33%). Veneer at February exhibited minimum success in 30 DAG (28.88%) and survivability in 60 DAG (26.67%) and 90 DAG (26.67%). Maximum shoot length was recorded from Cleft at April (25.00 cm) and minimum from cleft at February (12.67 cm). The highest shoot diameter (0.57 cm) was found from splice at March and cleft at May, while the lowest from veneer at February (0.32 cm). Maximum number of leaves/graft (20.00) was gained from cleft at February, whereas minimum from veneer at February (5.00). Number of shoots/graft was recorded the highest from splice at March (3.33 cm), whereas the lowest (1.67) from veneer at May.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable method and time of grafting for vegetative propagation of Indian olive.
To study the interaction effect of methods and time of grafting in propagation of Indian olive.
To standardized the effective time as well as method of grafting in Indian olive.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted on effect of method and time of grafting in Indian olive at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2011-2012. The experiment consisted of three methods of grafting viz., cleft, splice and veneer, and four time of grafting viz., February, March, April and May. The two factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Thus there were (4×3) 12 treatment combinations. Ten grafts were prepared in each replication. A total number of 360 (12 × 3 × 10) grafts were prepared in first week of the month February to May, 2012. The seedlings of local Indian olive were raised in 20´15 cm polybags filled with a mixture of silt and compost in equal proportion. Scion of Indian olive with about 8-10 cm long was used in this experiment. The grafting was done on the same day of scion collection in each month. The grafting operation was done with a sharp knife on the rootstocks of about 10-15 cm above the soil level. Grafting tape was used to tie the grafts. The grafts were covered with polythene bags, which promoted the retention of high humidity within the bag up to the union of grafts and prevented the drying out of the bud wood. The prepared grafts were kept under partial shade in the mist house. The polythene covering was removed after bud break when 4-5 leaves were appeared on the grafts. The grafting tape was removed when the grafts were confirmed. Data in respect of days to bud break, per cent graft success (30 DAG), survivability(60 DAG and 90 DAG)), shoot length , shoot diameter , number of leaves per graft and number of shoots per graft at 90 DAG were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above results, it may be concluded that among the grafting methods cleft and splice showed better performance in respect of percent success, survivability and vegetative growths. On the other hand, grafting in May performed better over other months of grafting. So, vegetative propagation of Indian olive is suggested by cleft and splice grafting in the month of May for better success and survivability.
