Effect of Time of Grafting on Success and Growth of Longan (euphoria Longana)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to investigate the effect of grafting time on success and growth of longan was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during July 2011 to September 2012. Data on success and growth parameters of longan graft were varied significantly. The earliest bud break was obtained from March grafting (17.67 days) followed by June (20.17 days), whereas January (57.67 days) took maximum time to bud break. The highest success of grafting at 30, 60 and 90 DAG (86.67, 86.67 and 83.33 %, respectively) was recorded in January operation. The lowest success at 30, 60 and 90 DAG (31.67, 31.67 and 30.00 %, respectively) was obtained from the grafts at December operation. Maximum number of leaves/graft, shoots/graft and shoot length (10.94, 2.87 and 24.63 cm, respectively) were recorded from the grafting in April, while minimum number of leaves/graft and shoots/graft (1.67 and1.33, respectively) was found from the grafts at October and minimum shoot length (7.04 cm) was found from the grafts at October and November. Maximum shoot diameter (0.48 cm) was obtained from the grafting at November compared to those of January and February (0.34 cm).

Objectives:

To study the effect of grafting time for vegetative propagation of Longan.
To determine the suitable time of grafting for vegetative propagation of Longan.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during July 2011 to September 2012. There were twelve treatments in this experiment. Treatments were twelve months, started from July 2011 to June 2012. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Ten grafts were prepared in each replication. A total number of 360 (12 × 3 × 10) grafts was prepared in the 1^st week of each month starting from July 2011 to June 2012 using cleft method of grafting. Seedlings of BARI Anshphal-1were raised in 20´15 cm polybags, and used as rootstock. The current year mature scion of BARI Anshphal-2 with about 8-10 cm length was used in this experiment. The cleft grafting was done on the same day of scion collection in every month. The grafting operation was done with a sharp knife on the rootstocks of about 10-15 cm above the soil level. Grafting tape was used to tie the grafts. The grafts were covered with polythene bags, which helped the retention of high humidity within the bag up to the union of grafts. The prepared grafts were kept under partial shade in the mist house. The polythene covering was removed after bud break when 4-5 leaves were appeared on the grafts. The grafting tape was removed when the grafts were confirmed. Data in respect of days to bud break, per cent graft success (at 30, 60 and 90 DAG), number of leaves per graft, number of shoots per graft, shoot length and shoot diameter at 90 DAG were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Cleft grafting in the month of November, January, February and April exhibited higher success as well as subsequent growth of the graft. It was the first year investigation; therefore, the experiment will be continued for further verification.
