Effect of Time and Method of Grafting on the Success and Survivability of Cowa (garcinia Cowa)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to determine proper time and grafting methods of Cowa at CRS, Jaintapur, Sylhet was conducted during January to December, 2012. In case of method of grafting the highest success and survivability were found from cleft grafting, whereas in respect of vegetative growth veneer grafting performed the best. In case of grafting time, the highest (100%) success and survivability were observed from January and September, while the lowest (20 and 20 %, respectively) from July and November. The highest shoot length (41.83 cm) was found from June, followed by December (29.67 cm) and lowest (9.66 cm) from July. The highest branches/graft were recorded from February (5.0), while the lowest (1.00) from July. The combined effect of time and method of grafting exhibited a signification variation. Irrespective of grafting method the success and survivability of grafts were found the highest (100%) in January and September, while the lowest (10%) in July and November. Maximum shoot length (48.00 cm) was found from veneer grafting at June, while veneer grafting at December produced the maximum shoot girth (1.58 cm). Number of branches was found the highest (5.33) in veneer grafting grafted at the month of February, April and June.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable method and time of grafting for vegetative propagation of cowa.
To study the interaction effect of methods and time of grafting in propagation of cowa.
To standardized the effective time as well as method of grafting in cowa.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted on effect of method and time of grafting in cowa at the Fruit Research Farm of Citrus Research Station, Jaintapur, Sylhet during January to December 2012. The experiment consisted of two methods of grafting viz., cleft and veneer, and twelve months of grafting at one-month interval from January to December 2012. The two factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Thus there were (2×12) 24 treatment combinations. Ten grafts were prepared in each replication. A total number of 720 (24 × 3 × 10) grafts were prepared in first week of the month from January to December, 2012. The seedlings of local cowa were raised in 20´15 cm polybags filled with a mixture of silt and compost in equal proportion. Scion of cowa with about 6-8 cm long was used in this experiment. The grafting was done on the same day of scion collection in each month with a sharp knife on the rootstocks of about 8-10 cm above the soil level. The grafts were covered with polythene bags, which promoted the retention of high humidity within the bag up to the union of grafts and prevented the drying out of the bud wood. The prepared grafts were kept under partial shade in the mist house. The polythene covering was removed after bud break when 4-5 leaves were appeared on the grafts. The grafting tape was removed when the grafts were confirmed. Data in respect of days to bud break, per cent graft success (30 DAG), survivability(60 DAG and 90 DAG)), shoot length , shoot diameter , number of leaves per graft and number of shoots per graft at 90 DAG were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

The conclusion may be drawn as January and September is the best month for grafting of cowa sapling irrespective of grafting method. But cleft grafting method in the other month showed best results. Therefore in cowa cleft grafting should be done to get more success.
