Effect of Bagging on the Yield and Quality of Jackfruit

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Find out the effect of bagging on the yield and quality of Jackfruit was conduct at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2011-12. Transparent polybag, blue polybag, cotton cloth bag and gunny bag were used to cover the female inflorescence after subsequent dusting of pollen. Significant variation in fruit weight and number of bulb was observed among the studied germplasms. The heaviest fruit was recorded in treatment T₁ (9.0 kg) followed by T₂ (7.2 kg), while the lowest in T₄(5.6 kg). Bulbs/fruit was significantly higher in T₁(190), while lower (101) in T₃. Though result on others parameter was insignificant. The longest fruit (32.8 cm) and the widest (21.5 cm) fruits were recorded in T₁, while the shortest (26.0 cm) and the narrowest (19.5 cm) fruits were recorded in T₄. Edible portion was maximum in T₄ (31.3%) followed by T₃ (31%) and minimum in T₁ (29.3%). TSS did not differ significantly. Maximum TSS (16.7%) was found in T₁ and minimum (15.7%) in T₅. Irrespective of treatments fruit surface was smooth with low fiber content. Fruit colour of all the treatments was greenish yellow, but in T₅ was brownish yellow. Fruit attractiveness was excellent in T₁ treatment and inferior in control.

Objectives:

To study the effect of bagging on yield and quality of jackfruit
To find out the appropriate bagging materials for higher yield and good quality fruits
To standardized the effective bagging techniques for period of jackfruit.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with selected jackfruit trees in the Fruit Research Farm, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. There were four treatments viz. types of bag transparent polybag (T₁), blue polybag (T₂), cotton cloth bag (T₃), gunny bag (T₄) and control (T₅). The female spikes were hand pollinated for 2 to 3 times at 5 days interval and subsequent bagging was performed in this experiment. Fertilizers eg. 250 g TSP, 250 g MOP and 20 kg Cowdung per plant were applied and subsequent irrigation were given in 20 August 2011. The experimental plot was ploughed with power tiller just before applying fertilizer. Weeding was performed twice in the month March and April 2012. Unnecessary branches were prunned off and flood irrigation was provided on 12 October 2011. Data on fruit characteristics like length and diameter of fruit, fruit attractiveness, fruit weight, TSS and shelf life of fruits were recorded and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Irrespective of bagging materials yield and fruit quality of jackfruit performed better than control fruit (without bagging). Among the bagging materials, the transparent poly bag was better for improving the jackfruit size and shape as well as especially attractive colour and might be recommended for use in higher yield and good quality fruits of jackfruit.
