Soil samples from 15 widely occurring and intensively cultivated soil series of Bangladesh were examined  for their potassium  status. Ammonium acetate extractable K was found  to be in medium range (0.16-0.30 me%) in Burichong, Ajmiriganj and Baliadangi Soils and the K values were below critical level (K  <.15 m.e.%) in rest of the soils.  Non-exchangeable  K determined by JAN H2S04 ranged from 0.13 to OA6m.e.% and from 0.23 to 3.24 m.e.% when determined by IN HN03 (boiling for 10 minutes) method. For all soil series, K extracting power of the extractants were in the decreasing order of JN HN031AN H2S041N NH40Ac 1:10 water (1.03 0.230.14 0.01me%).Exchangeable K (IN NH40Ac) showed a significant correlation with JAN H2S04 extractable K (r = 0.53).17K relationship between exchangeable K and IN HN03 extrac table K was not, however, significant.

Soil, Potassium, Soil series, Soil fertility
The soil series are Chandina, Tippera, Debidwar, Burichong, Goyainghat, Ajmiriganj, hadimnagar, Jaflong, Pritipassa, Mirsharai, Karnafuli, Sara, Baliadangi and Gongachara of Bangladesh.

  Soil fertility

To evaluate the amount of different forms of soil potassium (soluble, exchangeable and  non-exchangeable) and their relationship in 15 widely occurring and intensively cultivated  soil  series  of Bangladesh.

Fifteen soil samples  were collected from widely occurring and  intensively  cultivated soil series of Bangladesh. The soil series are Chandina, Tippera, Debidwar, Burichong, Goyainghat, Ajmiriganj, hadimnagar, Jaflong, Pritipassa, Mirsharai, Karnafuli, Sara, Baliadangi and Gongachara. The soil  samples were   characterised  by standard Chemical Techniques. Cation  exchange capacity was determined by a method as described. Water soluble  K and  exchangeable K were determined by shaking  5 gm of soil for 30 minutes  with 50 ml distilled  water  and with 1N neutralllmmonium acetate, respectively.  Non-exchangeable K were determined by two methods using 1.4N  H2S04  and  1N HN03 with 10 min. boiling.

Chemical analysis of the soil samples showed  a wide variability in various soil properties including potassium. In general water soluble potassium ranges from 3.0 to 7.0 ppm with a mean value of 4.53 ppm. Exchangeable K (lN  NH40Ac  extract) were below critical level (0.15 m.e.%) in 10 out of 15 soil series. The highest values for exchangable k of 0.30 me% was recorded in Karnafuli soil and this was followed by medium level of exchangable  K of 0.25 and 0.21 me%  in Burichong  and  Ajmiriganj  soil series, respectively. The lowest value for ex changeable K of 11.07 me% was obtained in Chandina soil. Similar values for exchange able K were reported.   Non- exchangeable  K ranged from 0.13 to 0.46 me% (1.4N H2S04 extract) and 0.23 to 3.24 me% (1N HN03 extract with 10 min boiling) having mean values of 0.23 and 1.03 me% respectively. A  wide variability in the non-exchangeable K values among the soil types. The non- exchange able K extracted by lN NH03 was highest in Gongachara soil (3.24 me%)  followed by Sara (2.79 me%).  On the other  hand significant quantities  of non-exchangeable  K was extracted by 1.4N H2S04 method from Karnafuli  series  (0.46 me%)  followed  by Gongachara series (0.40 me%).  Exchange able (lN NH40Ac)  K shows a significant correlation  (r  = 0.53) with K extracted by 1.4N H2S04. The relationship of exchange able K with 1N HN03 soluble K was not significant (r = 0.043).  Lack  of  significant relationship  between  exchangeable  K and HN03 extractable K could be due to variation in artifact in the extraction procedure. Total K content  ranges from 11.33 - 79.41 me%. The highest total K content was79.41 me% in Gongachara soil which was fol lowed by 71.83 me% in Baliadangi soil. The lowest value for total K (11.33 me%) was ob tained in Khadimnagar soil and the next lowest content of total K of 23.66 me% was found in Jaflong soil series. The total K values for Rangamati soil (30.18 me%) and for Pritirnpassa soil (36.82 me%) were also not as high as compared to other soils under study. Results revealed that most of the other  soils need  adequate supply  of K fertilizer for  successful sustainable crop production.
