A field experiment was conducted  at Gacltabari, Madhupur representing Red Brown Terrace Soils with wheat as test crop using different combinations of N-, P-, K- , S- and Zn-fertilizers during 1988-89 Rabi season. Results indicated sharp response of wheat to N-and S-fertilizers. The highest number of plants/m2 and plant height were recorded in treatments T14 and T6 with 120 and 160 kg N/ha including recommended doses of other nutrients. Application of N-, P-, K- and S-fertilizers significantly increased the grain and straw yields of wheat. Increase in grain yield from application of 120 kg N/ha was 186% (4.5 t/ha) over N-control (1.6 t/ha) treatment as compared to 126% (3.5 t/ha) and 187% (4.5t/ha) due to 80 and 160 kg N/ha application, respectively. Grain yield increase at 13 kg P, 33 kg K and 20 kg S/ha were 42, 50 and 52% respectively as compared to 45, 57 and 52%  due to application of 26 kg P, 66 kg K and 40 kg S /ha, respectively over control. The results indicate that application of 120 kg N, 13 Kg P, 33 kg K and 20 kg S/ha is required to obtain wheat yields of 4.5 t/ha in the Red Brown terrace Soils.

To determine the effect of fertilization on the growth and yield of wheat in Red Brown Terrace Soils of Bangladesh.

The field experiment was conducted at Gachabari, Madhupur representing Red Brown Terrace Soil and  using wheat  (var. Pak. 81) as test plants  during 1988-89 Rabi season.  Soil sample was analysed by ASI methods. Fertilizer rates used in the experiment were nitrogen @ 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg/ha; Phosphorus @ 0, 13, 26 and 39· kg P/ha; Potassium@ 0, 33, and 66 kg K/ha,Sulphur @ 0, 20 and 40 kg S/ha and zinc @ 0 and  5 kg Zn/ha from  urea, TSP, MP, gypsum  and  zinc  oxide,  respectively. Each  treatment was replicated 4 times in randomized block design having individual plot  size of 5m x 3m. All the fertilizer nutrients except N were applied at the time  of sowing  on 8th  November, 1988. Nitrogen as urea  was applied in two equal splits, half at 25th day of sowing and the rest half at 50th day of sowing. The crop  was irrigated 4 times at 18th, 39th, 55th and 76th day of sowing and was kept weed free upto 60 days  after  sowing. Plant  samples were collected during harvesting, oven  dried  at 650C and were taken  for chemical  analysis. The total nitrogen content of grain and straw was estimated by micro kjeldahl method and phosphorus by  Olsen   method. Potassium and sulphur were analysed  by digesting  the samples in nitric(-) perchloric acid system and determined by using flame photometer and spectrophotometer, respectively.

Application of N, P, K and S fertilizers had some positive influence on the uptake of the nutrients by wheat grain and straw although such influence  was only statistically significant for N and P content in grain. The highest number of plants/m2 and plant height were recorded in treatments T14 and T6 with 120 and 160 kg N/ha including recommended doses of other nutrients. Application of N-, P-,K-and S- fertilizers significantly increased the grain and straw yields of wheat. Grain yield increase at 13 kg P, 33 kg K and 20 kg S/ha were 42, 50 and 52% respectively as compared to 45, 57 and 52%  due to application of 26 kg P, 66 kg K and 40 kg S /ha, respectively over control.
