Glass house and field experiments were conducted during 1984-85 and 1985-86 to find out the deficiency of potassium in Ghatail and Lokdeo series soils in order to determine the optimum requirement of potassium  for HYV boro rice, IRATOM-24.  In glass house  experiments, sor­ghum and rice were used as test crops.  Both Ghatail and Lokdeo series soils were found deficient in potassium.  Between sorghum and rice, sorghum was a better indicator for potassium deficiency. Results of field experiments indicated a significant influence of potassium  on IRATOM-24 in both soil series. In Ghatail soil, the yield of grain was increased with the application of potassium at the rate of 50 kg K20/ha and subsequent increase of potassium reduced the yield.  The highest straw yield was recorded with 100 kg K20/ha. In Lokdeo soil, the grain yield increased from 3 to 4.7t /ha with 50 kg K20/ha indicating significant response of rice to K fertilizer. Although identical  with 50, 100 and 150 kg K20/ha, the highest straw yield was recorded with 200 kg K20/ha.

To evaluate the potassium fertility of two soils in the laboratory and glass house and to correlate the predicted fertility with the response of rice in fields to added potas­sium in two different soils of Bangladesh

Two soil samples representing Ghatail  and Lokdeo series  were collected  from Jamalpur and Mymensingh districts for laboratory and glass house studies. The samples  were sent to the Agro-services. The  elements  which were found deficient  in the soils were cor­rected   for  optimum   plant  growth  except potassium. The amount  of elements added to the optimum treatment  were about  three times the deficiency critical  level. Based  on the results of glass house study, two field  experiments were carried out during boro rice season to determine the optimum level of potassium  to maximize rice yield. The locations .were cropping system research site of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute  at  Lahirikanda, Jamal­pur and Kahnar, Mymcnsingh representing Ghatail and Lokdeo series respectively. The rice variety used in both experiments was IRATOM-24. The fertilizer doses used were 100 kg N 100 kg P20s, 30 kg Sand 5 kg Zn per ha supplied as urea, TSP, Gypsum and zinc sulphate respectively.The levels of potassium were 0, 50, 100, and 200 kg K 20/ha  from MP. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block  design  with  four  replications. The whole amount  of TSP,  Gypsum,  Zinc  and half of urea were applied at the time of final land preparation.The rest of urea was ap­ plied in two splits. The row to row and hill to hill distance were 25 cm and 10 cm respec­tively. All other agronomic practices were carried out as and when necessary.The crop was harvested at full maturity and data on grain and straw  yield  per  hectare  were recorded.
