Poultry Manure with Inorganic Nitrogen on Growth and Yield of Onion (allium Cepa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) in 2004 to investigate the effect of poultry manure along with inorganic N-fertilizer on the nutrient uptake, growth and yield of onion. The onion (Allium cepa L.) cv. "Taherpuri" was grown under six treatments viz. recommended dose of inorganic N (115 kg ha^-1, 100% N), 75% of inorganic N + S t ha' poultry manure, SO% inorganic N + 10 t ha^-1 poultry manure, 25% inorganic N + IS t ha-! poultry manure, IS t ha' poultry manure and absolute control (without poultry manure and inorganic N). Plant height, total dry matter, single bulb weight, yield and nutrients uptake at different growth stages of onion varied significantly due to application of poultry manure and inorganic- N fertilizer. Among the treatments, the highest yield (10.1t ha-!) and yield attributes of onion were recorded under the application of SO% inorganic N with 10 t ha-! of poultry manure, which was 14% higher compared to 100% inorganic-N fertilizer. The higher nutrient uptake viz. N, P and K was noted in plot where poultry manure was applied at 10 t ha^-1 along with 50% inorganic-N. It is concluded that application of 10 t ha^-1 poultry manure was enough to reduce 50% inorganic-N in onion cultivation.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of poultry manure along with inorganic N-fertilizer on nutrient uptake, growth and yield of onion.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research farm of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during January to April 2004. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six treatments viz. T₁: N₁₀₀_% (115 kg N ha^-I)-PM (poultry manure), T₂: N₇₅_% + 5 t ha^-I PM, T₃: N₅₀_% + 10 t ha^-1 PM, T₄: N₂₅_% + 15 t ha^-I PM, T₅: 15 t ha^-I PM and T₆: N_o%., -PM, each with three replicates. The physico-chemical properties of the soil and poultry manure were presented. The unit plot size was 2.5 x 3.0m having plant spacing of 20 x 15 cm. The full amount of poultry manure, triple super phosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP) and one-third of inorganic-N as urea were applied in respective plots during final land preparation and thoroughly mixed with soil. The remaining 2/3rd N was applied at 3rd and 5th week after planting as top dressing. Onion (Allium cepa L.) cultivar "Taherpuri" was used as the test crop. The seedlings were collected from BADC farm, Kashimpur, Gazipur. Healthy and uniform seedlings were transplanted in the plot. After transplanting the seedlings, intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation and control of pest were done as and when necessary for better growth and development of the plants. Ten onion plants were harvested at 21 days after intervals, plant height was measured from the base of the soil to tip of the tallest leaf, and plants were separated into root, stem and leaves and dried in an electrical oven for 48 hours at 70°C. The dried samples were weighed and ground to 390 μm. Samples (500 mg) of this ground material were analyzed for N, P and K by semi-micro Kjeldahl method. Total N content in plant samples was determined by distillation and titration. Total P content in the extract was determined following Vanado- Molybdate yellow color method as described. Total K content was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Total accumulation of N, P and K uptake was computed using N, P and K concentration and biomass data. The collected data were statistically analyzed using MSTATC computer package program developed. The means for all the treatments were calculated and analysis of variances for each of the characters was performed and means were separated by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

Application of 10 t ha^-1 of poultry manure was found to be useful to reduce 50% inorganic N in onion cultivation. For yield maximization, poultry manure @ 10 t ha^-1 along with 50% recommended dose of inorganic N appeared to be the best in respect of fertility management by enriching the soil with organic matter and turning vegetable cultivation towards organic farming. Replacing the chemical fertilizers by poultry manure will considerably benefit the farmers and it will definitely reduce the environmental pollution caused by chemical fertilizers.
