Effects of Seed Size and Harvesting Method on the Yield of Three Summer Mungbean (vigna Radiata L.)varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from March 2004 to July 2004 to study the effect of seed size and harvesting method on seed yield of summer mungbean varieties. The experiment consisted of three varieties viz. BINA mung-5, BARI mung-5 and BARI mung-2, three seed sizes viz. large, small and unassorted seed and two harvesting methods viz. stalk cutting and individual pod collection. The experiment was laid out in split-split plot design with three replications. The highest yield (1017 kg/ha) was obtained from BINA mung-5. Large seed gave higher yield and seed yield had a positive relationship with seed size. Harvesting method also showed significant variations in yield and yield contributing characters. Individual mature pod collection gave higher seed yield. Interaction effect of variety and seed size showed that BINA mung-5 planted with large seed produced the highest seed yield. Effect of interaction of variety and harvesting method showed that individual pod collection in BINA mung- 5 gave the highest seed yield. The result showed that planting BINA mung-5 using large seeds and individual pod collection. produced the highest seed yield among the treatment combinations.

Objectives:

The present work was undertaken to study the effect of seed size and harvesting methods on seed yield of mungbean varieties

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from March to July 2004. The experimental field was a medium high land with silt loam texture belonging to the non- calcareous dark-grey floodplain soil of the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain, Agroecological zone, AEZ-9. The pH value of the soil ranged from 6.6 to 7.0. The experiment consisted of three varieties viz. BINA mung-5, BARI mung-5 and BARI mung-2, three seed sizes viz. large (O.036-0.045g seed^-1), small (0.017 -0.025g seed^-1) and unassorted (0.026- 0.035g seed^-1) and two harvesting methods viz. individual pod collection (pod picking when turned black) and stalk cutting method (harvesting 'at a time). The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications assigning the variety in main plot, seed size in the sub plot and harvesting method in the sub-sub plot. For individual pod collection mature pods (black pods) were picked up by hand on every alternate day. From each unit plot 10 plants were selected at random for recording data on crop characters. Seed and straw yield were recorded from one meter square/plot. The collected data were compiled and analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (AN OVA) technique with the help of MSTAT -C and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984)

Achievement/Findings:

Significant variation was found due to the combined effect of variety, seed size and harvesting method in respect of seed yield of mungbean. The highest seed yield (1105 kg/ha) was obtained from the treatment combination of BINA mung-5, large seed size and individual pod collection harvesting method. The lowest seed yield (807 kg/ha) was found from BARI mung-2, small seed size and stalk cutting harvesting method. Interaction effects of variety, seed size and harvesting method on plant height, crop dry weight was also found to be statistically significant. It may be concluded that BINA mung-5 sowing with large seed and individual pod picking method could be the best option to have highest yield of mungbean.
