Extent of Lowland Clayey Soils of Bangladesh and Their Agricultural Potentialities

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Lowland clayey soils are one of the most valuable resources as they cover areas often producing the highest yields of rice. In Bangladesh, large tracts of low and medium low-lying rice fields either lie fallow after B. Aman/T. Aman harvest or are prepared for the cultivation of Aus. Often the prime time of planting is missed if the field is prepared through traditional tillage methods due to heavy consistence and slow drainage of clayey soils. Despite these constraints there is great potential for growing some upland crops viz., wheat, mustard, pigeonpea, chickpea, potato, soybean or com after rice on the clayey soils by zero or minimum tillage.

Objectives:

To identify the lowland clay soils of Bangladesh and their agricultural potentials.

Methodology:

The total extent of clayey soils of Bangladesh in different land types is 3.7 mil lion hectares among which 0.8 million hectares are lowland clayey soils. The districts which cover major areas are Sunarnganj, Sylhet, Netrokona, Natore, Kishoreganj, Noagaon, Munshiganj, Habiganj, Dhaka, Gazipur, Gopalganj, Manikganj, Moulvibazar, Narayanganj, Pabna,Sunarnganj and Sylhet.The FSR scientists of the on-farm research division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) tested potato, maize, boro rice and wheat crops at various FSR sites with zero tillage cultivation and found the results encouraging. Drainage, moisture holding capacity and temperature are three important determinants to grow upland crops in lowland clayey soils after rice during the rabi season. On land where flooding continues after the end of the rainy season mainly on lowland the rabi length of growing period begins from the date when flooding ends. Achievement/Findings:

In general, the temperatures are vary 10°C and 2SO., The climatic suitability is greater for temperate crops like wheat, potato, mustard and lentil. Conversely minimum temperatures below 20°C may interfere with pollination in aman paddy and minimum below 15°C retried vegetative growth in HYV paddy. Thus, it is high time to increase cropping in tensity in lowland/medium lowland clayey soils for attaining self-sufficiency in food grains.
