To Observe the Performance of Grafted and Normal Seedling Plants of BARI Jackfruit- 2.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Hill Tracts Agricultural Research Station, Ramgarh, Khagrachari during 2011-12 to observe the performance of grafted and seedling plants of BARI jackfruit- 2. The plants are in vegetative growth stage and different growth characteristics were studied. Among the jackfruit plant average plant height (3.61 m), base girth (21.67 cm), number of branch/plant (9.6), leaf number (1176.3) and leaf size (16.9 cm x 8.2 cm) were recorded the highest in seedling plants of jackfruit in contrast plant height (1.96 m), base girth (11.83 cm), number of branch/plant (8.3), number of leaves/plant (262.6) and leaf size (12.5 cm x 8.8cm) were found the lowest from grafted plant.

Objectives:

The present experiment was undertaken to see the performance of grafted seedlings of jackfruit.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Hill Tracts Agricultural Research Station, Ramgarh, Khagrachari during 2011-12. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with five replications. There were two types of plants viz. grafted and seedling plant and these plants were planted in June, 2010 in a spacing 6 x 6 m distance. In each pit was fertilized with 5 kg cowdung, 300g urea, TSP and MP in two installments at the beginning and the end of the rainy season. Data on plant height, base girth of the plant, number of main branches/plant, and number and size of leaf were recorded from each plant. Weeding, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the seedling and grafted plants all the studied growth parameters were found higher in seedlings plants than grafted plants. Hence it was concluded that the growth rate of jackfruit grafts was slower than seedlings.
