The comparative study of somaclonal rice lines (p-3, p-7, p-8 and p-9) showed significantly lower number of sterile tillers and leaves per hill than the mother variety BR3. The leaf size was also found different with BR3. The flag leaf of the somaclonal lines were found significantly longer and broader, almost double in area in p-3 compared to BR3. The somaclonal lines were found 18-22 days earlier in flowering and maturity compared to BR3. Most of them were dependent on early enhancement of LAI but without curtailing the reproductive phase. The somaclonal lines than BR3. Although somaclonal lines showed higher number of grains per panicle, but their grain size was significantly smaller, thus showing no yield increase in somaclonal lines.

The objective of the study was to identify the changes brought in morpho-physiological characters of rice somaclonal lines developed from BR3.

The experiment was conducted with four somaclonal lines (p-3, p-7, p-8 and p-9) along with their mother BR3 during February to June 1991, at the farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. The soil of the experiment field was sandy loam having pH 7.0. The soil belongs to Sonatola series and AEZ 9: Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain Soil. The amount of organic matter, available N, P and K were 1.2%, NH4+N 18 ppm, 9 ppm and 0.21 meq.%, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m×3m and the plants were spaced at 20cm × 15 cm. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 60 kg P2O5, 60 kg K2O, 20 kg S and 4 kg Zn/ha in the form of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively during the time of land preparation and N 100 Kg/ha in the form of urea in 3 equal splits at planting, maximum tillering and before panicle initiation stage. One 40 days old seedling was planted per hill. Six hills from each plot were harvested each time from 40 days after transplanting (DAT) at 10 days interval up to flowering. The data on number of tillers, number of leaves, leaf area, total dry matter (TDM) per hill and plant height were collected from the harvested sample. The physiological parameters like Crop Growth Rate (CGR), Net Assimilation Rate (NAR) were calculated from the hills harvested from the mean values of leaf area and TDM (Radford, 1967). Yield data were recorded from the hills harvested from  a square meter area and 10 hills/plot were randomly selected to collect the yield component data. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean values were evaluated by LSD.

Tissue culture technique for somaclonal variation could bring about changes in morphological characters e.g. plant height, panicle length, grain size and physiological characters e.g. early maturity, NAR etc. creating opportunity for selection on the basis of desirable characters for overall improvements of rice. It was also evident that early enhancement of LAI could bring about earliness in rice without curtailing the grain maturation period, thus without reducing the grain yield. However, although yield was not increased even with the improvement of reproductive structure e. g. panicle length and grain number per panicle, grain fineness was achieved to attract consumers.
