Comparative Efficacy of Some Leaf Extracts and Celaflor, a Neem Based Insecticide Against Pulse Beetle, Callosobruchus Chinensis L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were conducted to study comparative efficacy of some leaf extracts viz. neem, eucalyptus, pithraj and annona leaf extracts and a neem based insecticide (Celaflor) against pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L. on gram seeds. The efficacy of botanicals were evaluated by considering adult mortality, oviposition, adult emergence, germination capacity and seed weight loss caused by the insect. Among the leaf extracts and insecticide celaflor showed highest adult mortality, lowest oviposition and adult emergence rate. Celaflor performed highest level of protection of gram seeds against C. chinensis and followed by neem, eucalyptus, pithraj and annona leaf extracts. All the leaf extracts and celaflor showed no adverse effects on seed germination.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of neem, eucalyptus, pithraj and annona leaf extracts and a neem based insecticide (Celaflor) against pulse beetle to protect pulse seeds in storage

Methodology:

The effects of neem (Azadirachta indica), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), pithraj (Aphanmixis polystachya) and annona, (Annona squamosa) leaf extracts and a neem based insecticide (Celaflor) on adult mortality, oviposition, adult emergence, seed weight loss against pulse beetle, C. chinensis and germination of seeds were evaluated in the laboratory. Fresh neem, eucalyptus, pithraj and annona leaves were washed with tap water and air dried. Then 10g of leaves were blended in an electric blender with 100 ml of water. The blended mixture was then filtered with fine cloth and the extract was considered as 10% leaf extract. Obtaining 0.5% celaflor, 1.0 ml commercial grade of Celaflor was added into 199 ml water. Gram seeds used in the experiment were purchased from local market, Mymensingh. To observe the effect of test materials on adult mortality five pairs of newly emerged beetles were released in a petridish containing a piece of filter paper at the bottom. Then tested leaf extracts at 10% and celaflor at 0.5% were sprayed with the help of a hand sprayer with equal number of spray on the beetles. The treatments were replicated three times with a control. Adult mortality was recorded in each replicate after 7 days of spraying and the data converted into percentage. Data obtained from the experiments were statistically analyzed in accordance with one factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Percent data were transformed into square root transformation and the mean values were compared by DMRT under Microsoft Statistical (MST AT) programmed with a computer.

Achievement/Findings:

The effect of treatments on seed germination was also observed and found that there was no significant (P<0.01) difference among the treatments. Seed germination ranged from 91.45 to 97.52%.
