A New Planting Technique for Polybag Grafted Rubber Seedlings in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest number of leaves, height, girth and survival rate were achieved in B1, B4, B4 and B1 blocks, and those of lowest values recorded in B3, B2, B3 and B3 blocks, respectively. Generally two-whorled fully hardened polybag budded stumps are planted in the field in our country. But it was revealed from the experiment that the polyhag grafted rubber seedling is suitable for plant ing just after sprouting the shoots. The shoots should not be allowed to grow more than 2.54 cm long in the nursery. This technique saves planting time, expenditure as well as 'supplying' vacancy filling could be achieved quickly if any casually arises.

Objectives:

To find out a more suitable planting technique for polybag grafted rubber seedlings

Methodology:

The size of the polybag was 45.72x30.48 cm. There were 30 perforations at the lower 30.48 cm of the bag. The bags were filled with top soil (0 - 15 cm) of fine tilth. TSP was added at the rate of 14 g per polybag together with soil. After filling, the bags were arranged in twin rows with 45 cm paths between pairs of rows. One pre-germinated seed of local T-1 clone was transplanted in each polybag. Weeding and watering were done as required. Urea, TSP and murate of potash were applied at the ratio of 4:3:2, respectively. Fertilizer was split @ 7, 7, 7, 14, 14, 14 and 14 g per seedling at the age of 2, 4, 6, 10, 14, 18 and 22 weeks, respectively. Fertilizer was also applied at the rate of 14 g per seedlings with 4 weeks intervals before one month of budding. Nine months old seedlings (2.03 cm diameter) were grafted with the help of yielding clones. Successful bud grafts were cut back after 21 days and the stumps were planted in the field just after sprouting the shoots. Fertilizer was split @ 56 and 84 gin the month of July and September, respectively on per plant basis. The analytical data showed that the pH of the soil was 4.5, organic carbon 0.93%, and C.E.C. 11.75 meq/100 g. The monthly average rainfall at Tarakhown Rubber Estate from June to November, 1986 were 4555, 7730, 4520, 2910, 2970 and 2205 ml, respectively.
