Variability and Selection in Tomato Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During 1989-90 growing season of Tomato five experiments were conducted in the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU. After raising F₂ population 16 F₃ family lines have been selected. Very high yield/plant of tomato was obtained in F₄, selected families. Group wise selection indicate a maximum of 299.6% increase while minimum was 97.7% increase over standard variety. Selection from F₅; population resulted into lines having 74%, increase in yield/plant over standard variety. In studying F₆population selection was attempted on different characters. There are lines which yield over the standard Manik. Three hundred germplasms have been grown and studied on the basis of days to flowering, yield and other characters. It was observed that fruit weight per plant was higher in genotypes having longer days to flower. Yield/plant was highly influenced by fruit weight per plant, while fruit weight and fruit number showed strong negative relationships in all groups.

Objectives:

a) to evaluate the performance of germplasms in respect of their yield and yield contributing characters; b) to select genotypes having higher potentiality than the already selected Tushti and Bikash lines; and c) to characterize some of the promising materials for ready reference

Methodology:

During 1989- 90 crop season five experiments were conducted in the Departmental Farm of the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department, BAU. The seedlings of about 22-27 days old were used for transplanting in all experiments. The lands were well prepared by ploughing and cross plouqhinq and the fields ware made weed free. The following fertilizers were applied at the rate shown against each. (a) Cowdung: 10 tons/he, (b) Urea: 140. kg/ha (c) TSP: 185 kg/ha and MP: 50 kg/ha. The pits were dug at a distance of 60 cm and 50 cm for from line to line and plant to plant in line respectively. Irrigation was applied once after about 25 days of transplantation of seedlings. Before that watering was done continuously for seven days after transplantation for better seedling establishment. Fungicides were applied twice in the field to control leaf blight. The following characters were studied (a) days to flower, (b) plant height, (c) number of fruit/plant, (d) individual fruit weight and (e) fruit yield per plant. The experiments conducted' during the period were: a) Performance of 6 F₂population and their 7 parents. b) Performance of 37 F₃ selected lines and four varieties. b) Performance of 31 F₅ selected lines and four varieties. c) Performance of 15 F₆ selected lines with three varieties. e) Variabilities and correlation coefficients in germplasm.

Achievement/Findings:

The results obtained during the year under report showed that a number of genotypes/lines are better than the presently available varieties. Some of those may be distributed to farmers for large scale cultivation during both early and late seasons.
