Effects of Phosphorus,sulphur and Boron on Growth,yield and Protein Content of Hickpea in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at FSRD site, Chabbashnagar, Godagari, Rajshahi during Rabi season of 2000-2001 to evaluate the effect of phosphorus, sulphur and boron on the growth, yield and protein content of chickpea. There were ten treatments comprising three levels each of P (0, 24 and 36 kg /ha), S (0, 10 and 20 kg/ ha) and four levels of B (0, 1, 1.5 and 2 kg /ha). Nitrogen @ 50 kg /ha and potassium @ 30 kg/ ha were applied as a blanket dose to all the plots. Application of phosphorus, sulphur and boron @ 24, 10 and 1 kg/ ha respectively significantly increased the branches/ plant, pods/ plant and 1000 seed weight which in turn resulted significantly higher seed yield (1.48 t/ ha) and stover yield (2.49 t/ ha) of the crop. The highest net return (Tk. 27236/ ha) and MBCR over control (2.92) were obtained from the treatment T₂ (P₂₄S_I0B₁,kg/ ha). Protein content of chickpea seed remained unaffected due to application of P, S and B. An application of P, S and B is necessary for improving yield potentialities of chickpea and the fertilizer dose P₂₄S₁₀B₁, kg /ha was found to be optimum for maximizing the yield, economic benefit as well as protein content of chickpea in High Barind Tract.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken with an objective of examining the effects of P, Sand B on the growth, yield and protein content of chickpea in High Barind Tract soil

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) site, Chabbishnagar, Godagari, Rajshahi during Rabi season of 2000-2001 to evaluate the effect of phosphorus, sulphur and boron on the growth, yield and protein content of chickpea. The soil of the experimental plots belongs to Amnura series under AEZ 26. The soil had 5.9 pH, 0.89% organic matter, 0.08% total N, 8 ppm available P, 0.23 me% exchangeable K, 15 ppm available S, 0.1 ppm available Band 1.2 ppm available Zn contents. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 10 treatments replicated thrice. The treatments comprised three levels each of P (0, 24 and 36 kg/ ha as triple super phosphate), S (0, 10 and 20 kg /ha as gypsum) and four levels of B (0, 1, 1.5 and 2 kg/ ha as borax). Nitrogen @ 50 kg/ha as urea and potassium @ 30 kg /ha as muriate of potash were applied as a blanket dose to all the plots. In treatment T g. effective Rhizobium inoculant was used instead of nitrogen fertilizer. Chickpea was harvested at full maturity on March 10, 2001. Observations were made on yield components from 10 randomly selected plants per plot. Protein content of seeds was determined by multiplying the %N with 6.25. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the present study show that application of P, S and B is necessary for improving yield potentialities of chickpea. So it appears that the fertilizer dose P₂₄S_l0B₁, kg/ ha was found to be optimum for maximizing the yield, economic benefit as well as protein content of chickpea in High Barind Tract.
