Genetic Improvement of Native Cattle (pabna) Through Selective Breeding

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to evaluate reproductive performance of Pabna cattle for improvement of milk production. Data on reproductive traits of animals born from 1992 to 2002 were extracted from the records of the daily herds of Pabna cattle at BLRI. The age at first heat, conception and calving were 877.81±26.53, 944.74±27.76 and 1228.63±29.01 days, respectively. The average post partum service, days open and calving interval were 100.42±54, 144.66±4.60 and 442.38±4.56 days, respectively. The number of service per conception and gestation length was 1.62±0.02 and 285.97±0.48 days, respectively. Post partum service was significantly higher (p<0.05) in first parity (132.30±11.85 days). There was an increasing trend of calf birth weight upto parity 4 (19.97±0.58, 20.51±0.65 and 21.22±0.57 Kg, respectively in 2^nd,3^rd and 4^th parity). Half sib heritability on calf birth weight was 0.37±0.02, i.e., medium in range. It indicates that 36.7% of the variation in both weights was due to heredity and the rest were controlled by environment. Therefore, it would be highly informative to add more population for evaluation of reproductive traits of Pabna cattle.

Objectives:

To evaluate reproductive performances of Pabna cattle for the improvement of milk production

Methodology:

The study was conducted to evaluate reproductive performance of Pabna cattle for improvement of milk production. The improvement of Pabna cattle had been started in BLRI since 1989 with a herd of 25 cows reared in semi intensive system. To achieve the objectives data on reproductive traits of animals born from 1992 to 2002 were extracted from the records of the daily herds of Pabna cattle at BLRI. Breeding plan was to mate superior Pabna cow with superior Pabna bull. Appropriate mathematical models were used to evaluate overall reproductive performances and birth weight of calves.
