Effect of Waste Jute Seed Powder on the Growth and Yield of Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in pot culture at the premises of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute on a clay loam soil of Tejgaon soil series to study the effect of waste jute seed powder as a source of plant nutrients on the growth and yield of jute plant. Crushed jute seed was added in the soil at the rate of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 percent and a recommend dose of NPK (40-10-20) was mixed thoroughly with the soil. A highly significant increase in the fresh biomass of jute leaves and plant height was noted. Though the biomass of base diameter, plant weight with leaves, plant weight without leaves and fiber weight were not significant the increases were spectacular compared to that of the control treatment.

Objectives:

To see the possible source of plant nutrients in the waste jute seeds to the soil and its effect on the growth and yield of jute.

Methodology:

Soils were collected from Dhaka district, belonging to Tejgaon soil series (Ulti soils) from 0-15 em in pot (10" x 10" x 7.5"). The soil (10 Kg) was processed and was placed in pot with polythene lining at the bottom. Waste jute seed (which had 5-10% germination) were crushed in machine (wheat) and mixed thoroughly with soil at the rate of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 percent, along with a recommended dose of fertilizers (40-10-20) and a control. It was laid out in randomized block design with four replications. Twenty five healthy seeds of C.olitorious variety 0-9897 were sown at 5 em depth at field capacity. All the cultural practices such as watering weeding and spraying were done in time. Only five plants were allowed to grow after fifteen days of sowing. Regular plant height, base diameters were recorded at an interval of fifteen days. The jute plants were harvested at an average flowering stage. The plant height, base diameter, fresh green weight of plant with and without leaves, weight of fresh leaves, fibre yield, leaf area and weight of dry root were recorded. Initial soil analysis was done following the methods as described by Agro Services International U.S.A., Arvel H. Hunter (1983).

Achievement/Findings:

It is observed that application of waste jute seed powder significantly increased the biomass of fresh weight of jute leaves and height of the plant. Effects of various wastes application on increased biomass production and plant height are in report. The data due to application of waste jute seed powder there was considerable increase in the biomass of fibre yield, base diameter, green weight with and without leaves and weight of dry root over the control. The beneficial effect of waste materials have earlier been reported by several workers such as Bhattacharya (1975) who found higher yield of rice by application of paper mill sludge.
