Study the Grafting Method and Time of Grafting in Cowa (garcinia Cowa)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to determine proper time and grafting methods of Cowa at CRS, Jaintapur, Sylhet was conducted during January to May, 2011. In case of method of grafting 100% success and survivability were found from both the grafting method, whereas in respect of vegetative growth cleft grafting exhibited the highest shoot length, girth and bunches/graft. In case of grafting time, 100% success and survivability were observed from February and March grafting. The highest length and girth of shoot (16.5 and 0.88 cm) was found from March, and lowest (16.0 and 0.78 cm) from February grafting. The combined effect of time and method of grafting exhibited a signification variation. Irrespective of grafting method and grafting time the success and survivability of grafts were found 100%. Maximum length and girth of shoots were found from both the grafting at March operation, while veneer at February exhibited the minimum. Number of branches was found the highest (5.33) in veneer grafting at the month of February and the lowest (3.00) in veneer at March.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable method and time of grafting for vegetative propagation of cowa.
To study the interaction effect of methods and time of grafting in propagation of cowa.
To standardized the effective time as well as method of grafting in cowa.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted on effect of method and time of grafting in cowa at the Fruit Research Farm of Citrus Research Station, Jaintapur, Sylhet during January to May 2011. The experiment consisted of two methods of grafting viz., cleft and veneer, and two months of grafting at February and March 2011. The two factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Thus there were (2 × 4) 4 treatment combinations. Twenty grafts were prepared in each replication. A total number of 240 (4 × 3 × 20) grafts were prepared in first week of the month from February and march, 2011. The seedlings of local cowa were raised in 8 ´ 6 inch polybags filled with a mixture of silt and compost in equal proportion. Scion of cowa with about 6-8 cm long was used in this experiment. The grafting was done on the same day of scion collection with a sharp knife on the rootstocks of about 8-10 cm above the soil level. The grafts were covered with polythene bags, which promoted the retention of high humidity within the bag up to the union of grafts and prevented the drying out of the bud wood. The prepared grafts were kept under partial shade in a poly tunnel. The polythene covering was removed after bud break. The grafting tape was removed when the grafts were confirmed. Data in respect of days to bud break, per cent graft success (30 DAG), survivability(60 DAG and 90 DAG)), shoot length , shoot diameter , number of leaves per graft and number of shoots per graft at 90 DAG were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

It was concluded that cowa was successfully propagated through veneer and cleft grafting method in the month of February and March.
