Breeding Research on Lentil and Lab Lab Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The results of five experiments on lentil and three experiments on lablab bean, carried out under the food legume breeding project, are reported. Large variations were observed in various characters in lentil and bean germplasrn trials with 641 and 144 lines, respectively. In lentil selection studies with groups of early, high yielding and bold-seeded genotypes, the coefficnts of genetic variation, heritabilities and expected genetic advance were estimated as moderately high for yield but CVg and GA were relatively low for maturity. Few macrosperma genotypes weighing 40-50 g per , 000 seeds were selected in the large-seeded group in comparison to prominent checks of microsperma types having 1000-seed wt. of 15-18 g. The biomass distribution and the growth parameters such as NAR, LAR, RGR and RLGR were examined in three genotypes of lentil to assess their physiological efficiency. Phenological studies with six sowing dates and six genotypes confirmed progressive reduction of lentil yield with later sowing dates but the degree of reduction varied with the genotypes. Twenty lentil genotypes which were screened against simulating rain treatments at pre-flowering, 50% flowering and pod setting periods, responded adversely in yield performance on average, with the exception of one genotype (Bm 967). In lablab bean breeding study on earliness and photoneutrality, the F₂, F₃ & F₄, progenies of a single cross DS 21/B x DS 109 were observed and few prospective segregates isolated. The earliest segregate, F4-72/U2, flowered on 21 Aug. 89, after about two months of sowing. An easy and working method to reliably estimate edible green pod yield/plant in bean was formulated, which may be effectively used in bean improvement research.

Methodology:

During 1989/90 research period, several experiments on lentil and lablab bean were carried out in line with the objectives. Besides, there were some international cooperative food legume traials and nurseries on lentil, chickpea and faba bean. Salient features of the methodologies of 5 lentil and 3 lablab bean experirnents, under report here. Sowing times for bean expts. dated between June/89 to Sept. /89 whilst those for lentil expts. dated Nov.-Dec. /89. Land preparation for the experiments was done during late Oct. and early November for lentil and 1 to 2 weeks before sowing for country bean. No chemical fertilizers or organic manures were ussd in the land preparation or in pit formation (for bean). Data on various plant characters were recorded as appropriate. The statistical analyses of the data and the estimation of parameters were done by standard procedures and formulae which was referred in the relevant places of the text.
