Interactive Effect of Irrigation Frequency on Fruit Retention, Yield and Quality of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of irrigation on fruit retention, yield and quality of mango was carried out at RARS, Jamalpur during the period from September 2010 to July 2011 involving three frequencies of irrigation i.e. 10-days and 20-days intervals and control (no irrigation) and two varieties namely BARI Aam-2 and BARI Aam-3 as treatments. The treatment combination V₂T₁ had highest fruit retentions on 16.04.11 (2.30) and 26.04.11 (1.53). Irrigation at 20 days interval in combination with BARI Aam-2 resulted in the earliest harvest and the irrigation at 20 days intervals or control along with BARI Aam-3 showed delayed harvest. There were marked differences among the treatment combinations with respect to number of fruits/plant, individual fruit weight, fruit breadth, skin weight, yield and shelf-life, whereas no significant variation was noted in fruit length and thickness, stone weight and TSS. BARI Aam-3 irrigation at 10 days intervals gave the highest fruits/plant (195.50). BARI Aam-2 irrigation at 10 days intervals resulted the heaviest fruit (316.41 g). BARI Aam-3 irrigation at 10 days intervals had maximum yield (32.33 kg/plant) compared to minimum in BARI Aam-2 under control (9.00 kg/plant). BARI Aam -3 irrigation at 10 or 20 days intervals exhibited the highest shelf-life (9.67 days).

Objectives:

To find out the effect of irrigation frequency on yield and quality of mango varieties.
To standardized the effective irrigation frequency as well as time of application in mango.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at the Fruit Farm of HRC, RARS, Jamalpur during the period from September 2010 to July 2011. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (Factorial) with three replications.

Factor A three frequencies of irrigation :T₁- 10-day intervals, T₂ - 20-day intervals and T₃ - control (no irrigation).Factor B two varieties namely : V₁-BARI Aam-2 and V₂- BARI Aam-3 were included as treatments in the experiment. Proper care and management of the plants under the experiment was taken as per requirement. The data on the following parameters number of fruits retained per panicle at 10-day intervals starting from pea stage upto maturity, date of harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breadth, fruit thickness, stone and skin weight, yield, TSS and shelf life were recorded. The collected data on different parameters of the experiments were tabulated and analyzed with appropriate design of experiment (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) adopting a statistical programme MSTAT-C. All the treatment means were separated by DMRT at 5% Level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that irrespective of varieties irrigation at 10 or 20 day intervals increase fruit retention, fruits per plant, fruit weight as well as fruit yield. Irrigation at 10 or 20 day intervals in combination with BARI Aam-3 gave the highest number of fruits per plant (195.50 and 186.33 respectively), yield (32.33 kg/plant and 30.83 kg/plant) and shelf- life (9.67 days) as compared to un-irrigated control. BARI Aam-2 irrigated at 10 days intervals exhibited the second highest yield (27.65 kg/plant).
