Effect of Deheading and Vine Lifting on the Growth and Yield of Sweet Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 2000 to April, 2001 to investigate the effect of deheading and lifting up of vines as intercultural operations on the growth and yield of sweet potato cv. Daulatpuri. The treatment comprised of 2 levels of deheading viz. no deheading (control) and deheaing and 4 levels of vine lifting, viz. no vine lifting (control), 1- time vine lifting, 2 times vine lifting, and 3 times vine lifting during the whole period of growth. Non deheaded plants produced highest per plant (0.546 kg) and per hectare yield of tuberous roots (29.44) over deheaded plants. In case of vine lifting, the control plants produced the highest number of tubers (7.13) per plant with highest dry matter content (31.88%). while the highest (0.543 kg) root yield/plant and per hectare tuberous roots yield (28.97 t/ha) were produced by two times vine lifting. In combination, of nodeheading and no vine lifting produced the highest number of tuberous roots (7.2) per plant. On the other hand, the highest per plant (0.62 kg) and per hectare (31.51 t/ha) tuberous roots were produced by the non deheaded and two times vine lifted plants.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of deheading as well as vine lifting on the growth and yield of sweet potato

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Horticultural Farm of the department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 2000 to April, 2001 using sweet potato cv. Daulatpur. The two factors experiment included two levels of deheading (i) no deheading of vines (control) (ii) deheading of vines after one month of plant growth and four levels of vine lifting were; (i) no vine lifting (control), (ii) lifting up of vines once after 60 days of deheading, (iii) lifting up of vines twice after 60 and 75 days of deheading and (iv) lifting up of vines thrice after 60, 75 and 90 days of deheading. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Cultural practices, such as weeding, earthing up, irrigation, plant protection etc. were done as and when necessary. The crops were harvested on April 18, 2001. Ten plants were selected at random from each unit plot and tagged for collection of the experimental data. The data were analyzed statistically and mean separation was done by LSD test.

Achievement/Findings:

Combined effect of different level of deheading and vine lifting was statistically significant on the growth and yield parameter of sweet potato except for number of branches per plant and dry matter content. From this study it can be concluded that higher tuber yield could be obtained by cultivating sweet potato through the practice of two times vine lifting with no deheading.
