Fertility Status of Soils from the Rubber Plantations of Madhupur Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Some composite soil samples from the rubber plantations of Madhupur tract have been studied for their edaphological characteristics. The soils from the plantation area can be graded as moderately fertile. The soils appeared to be deficient in available nitrogen phosphorus. potassium and sulphur. Extensive leaching caused by monsoon rainfall and high phosphorus fixing capacity might affect the fertility status of these soils. Soil physical and chemical parameters as well as the environmental conditions appear to be quite close to ideal for optimum growth of rubber plants in these soils. At the same time management has to be efficient and the needed fertilizers have to be applied.

Objectives:

To study the fertility status of some soils of the project area of the Madhupur rubber plantations.

Methodology:

Six composite soil samples were collected from the Pirgachha block of Madhupur rubber plantation area located in the Madhupur forest in Tangail district. The soil samples were collected from a depth of 0 to 15 cm. The locations of these six composite samples are: 1. Angaria. 2. Mominpur. 3. Pirgachha (1987 plantation). 4. Goliabaid (I988 plantation). 5. Arankhola . 6. Kaikachuna. Particle-size analysis was carried out by hydrometer method following the procedure of Piper (1966). Hygroscopic moisture was calculated from the loss of moisture from the sample as described. Field capacity of the soils was determined by pressure plate and pressure membrane apparatus following the procedure. pH of the soils was measured by a Corning glass electrode pH meter at a soil: water ratio of 1 : 2.5. Organic carbon was determined volumetrically by wet oxidation method of Walkley and Black as was described. Nitrogen was determined by Micro- Kjeldahl distillation method: Phosphorus by using a Shimadzu spec tro photometer after developing the yellow colour with vanado molybdate (Jackson 1962). Total potassium was estimated by using a name photometer; and available sulphur with the help of a spec trophotometer after developing turbidity with barium chloride (Jackson, 1962). Available zinc was measured using a Pye Unic am atomic absorption spectrophotometer as described. Cation exchange capacity was de termined by ammonium acetate method as described and the exchangeable Na⁺ and K⁺ were determined from the same extract using a name photometer. Exchangeable Ca⁺⁺ and Mg⁺⁺ were determined by EDTA method (Jackson, 1962). Exchangeable H⁺ was determined using 1NH₄OAc as described.

Achievement/Findings:

All the soils are fine textured. The textural classes of the soils of Angaria, Mominpur, Goliabaid and Pirgachha are silly clay loam whereas the soils of Arankhola and Kaikachuna are silty clay. The field capacity of the soils varies from 25 to 29%. The relatively small variation in the range of field capacity is due to the similarity in textural classes of the soils. The soils from the plantation area can be graded as moderately fertile. The soils appeared to be deficient in available nitrogen. phosphorus. potassium and sulphur. Extensive leaching caused by monsoon rainfall and high phosphorus fixing capacity might affect the fertility status of these soils. Soil physical and chemical parameters as well as the environmental conditions appear to be quite close to ideal for optimum growth of rubber plants in these soils.
