Studies on the Biology, Ecology and Management of Mahagony Shoot Borer Hypsipyla Robusta

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla king) is one of the most valuable timber species of Bangladesh. The main problem for raising mahogany plantations is the attack of the shoot borer, Hypsipyla robusts Moore (Pyralidae: Lapidoptera) that bores into the young shoot and makes tunnel inside. Heavy infestation by this pest has caused total failure of some plantations. The techniques for its management will help to raise successful plantation of mahogany in the country.

Objectives:

i) To determine the nature and extent of damage.

ii) To generate information on pest biology and ecology.

iii) To develop suitable pest management techniques.

Methodology:

Survey on the pest incidence in western and Southern districts was done. Alternative hosts and bio control agents were recorded. Screening of effective insecticide was made. Information on the life cycle of the pest was generated.

Achievement/Findings:

Extend of infestation in four western (Dinajpur, Natore, Chapai, Noawabgonj and Rajshahi) and three southern (Noakhali, Feni and Chittagong) districted were surveyed which revealed that on an average about 31.7% of the plants were affected. Surveys made on the incidence of the pest in shaded open, mixed, monoculture urban and rural plantation area and the result showed that the pest incidence is greater in open, monoculture and rural plantations. Braconid wasp was found to parasitize the larva of the pest. Efficacy of four types of systemic insecticides (Perfethion, Dimecron, Curator and Basudin) was being tested.
