Farmer's Practices of Dry Chilli (capsicum Annuum L.) Storage in Some Selected Sites of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to generate information about farmer's practices of dry chilli storage. The farmers of Bogra and Comilla adopted different technologies for dry chilli storage. They used earthen pot, tin container, polythene bag, bamboo made dully with polythene lining inside and bamboo made dully with bamboo leaf for storing dry chilli. Storage loss and deterioration of quality were the highest in earthen pot and the lowest in bamboo made dully with polythene lining inside. The farmers earned a net return of Tk. 3.07 from one kg of stored dry chilli. The BCR was 1.60. Lack of knowledge about modern storage technology, shortage of cash money, non-availability of storage space and theft were their main constraints faced by the farmers in storing chilli.

Objectives:

To identify the existing storage technologies of dry chilli adopted by the farmers
To estimate the cost and returns of dry chilli storage
To determine the storage loss of dry chilli
To identify the constraints to the storage of dry chilli.

Methodology:

A three-stage sampling technique was followed to select sample farmers for the study. In the first stage of sampling, Gabtoli upazila of Bogra and Homna upazila of Comilla district were selected for the collection of data where rabi chilli is grown extensively. In the second stage, one union from each upazila was selected purposively. Before selecting the sample farmers, a complete list of the chilli growers in each union was prepared by the help of block supervisors of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). Finally, a total of 120 farmers were selected randomly taking 60 samples from each district. The necessary information was collected with the help of a predesigned and pretested interview schedule. Collected data were grouped into small (1- 300 kg), medium (301- 600 kg) and large (601 kg and above) according to the capacity of dry chilli storage. Data were collected during 2002-2003. The local name and terms were used exactly according to the farmers' word. Collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives. Mostly tabular method of analysis using percentage, ratios, averages etc. was followed.

Achievement/Findings:

The farmers of Bogra and Comilia mostly used tin as fencing in their storehouses. Farmers dried chilli in mud floor, tin roof and concrete floor. The farmer stored chilli in earthen pot, tin container, polythene bag, bamboo made dully with polythene lining inside and bamboo made dully with dry bamboo leaves (dry).
