Influence of Age on Kraft Pulping of Muli Bamboo (melocanna Baccifera)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

No definite cutting age is maintained for extraction of bamboo for pulp and paper industries in Bangladesh. In this study an attempt has been made to find out the optimum cutting cycle for muli bamboo (Melocanna baccifera) from the point of view of pulp yield and quality. The results show that bleachable grade of pulp is obtained at a lower cooking time with younger bamboos (9 months old) than those of higher age groups. The pulp yield at a given point of delignification is the highest with 21 months old bamboos. Physical strength properties of the pulp are independent of age. Thus, it seems that 21 months old muli bamboo is better for pulping.

Objectives:

To observe the influence of age of muli bamboo on pulp yield and quality to determine an optimum cutting cycle for the species .

Methodology:

Muli bamboos of four different age groups were collected from sample plots of Silvicultural Research Station at Chimbuk in the Banderban district. The bamboo specimens were converted into approximately 40 mm long chips by hand cutting and then airdried. The air dried chips were sampled for pulping and stored in a cold storage, Kraft pulping of the airdried chips of all the four age groups were conducted in a 231 rotating digester heated with indirect steam. The digester was initially heated to a temperature of 80°C and then airdried chips equivalent to 2000 g oven dried chips were charged with chemicals in all the cooks. For each age group, cooking were done at three different H-factor to get three values of kappa number. The other cooking conditions were maintained at 16% active alkali (as Na₂O), 25% sulphidity, 4 : 1 liquor to wood ratio and 90 min to raise the temperature to 170°C. After cooking, the chips were discharged, thoroughly washed, disintegrated and then screened. The screened pulps were pressed to remove excess water, shredded, weighted and then sampled for determining moisture content. The screening rejects were also oven dried. The pulp yield and kappa number were determined. The pulp samples were then refined in a Valley beater to different freeness values and handsheets were made to determine the strength properties after conditioning the sheets at 23 ± 1°C and 50 ± 1% relative humidity. All the sheets were tested according to Scan Test Methods.

Achievement/Findings:

Bleachable grade pulp can be obtained at a lower cooking time with immature bamboos (9 month old). The cooking time was the maximum with 21 months old bamboos. At the same kappa value ( kappa no. 25), 21 month old bamboos produce the highest yield. The pulp yields were less with immature and older bamboos. The screening rejects were independent of age. Thus, screened yield also remained highest for 21 months old bamboos. The physical strength properties of the pulp like tear index, tensile index, and burst index were found to be unaffected by the age of bamboo.A cutting cycle of 21 months seems to be better for muli bamboo from the point of yield gain.
