Three grades of multination fertilizers were field tested in wetland rice culture at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm during Aus and Transplant Aman seasons,  1991 using  randomized  complete  block design with a view to evaluate their effectiveness against straight fertilizers. Results showed that  multi-nutrient fertilizers   performed  similarly   as  straight  fertilizers in increasing grain yield  of rice. Mineral  nutrition of and  nutrient  removal  by rice plants  were also almost similar irrespective of fertilizer  sources.

  Performance
  1. To evaluate their efficiency of advantages and disadvantage relative to straight fertilizers and
  2. To evaluate the efficiency of mixed /complex fertilizers relative lo straight ones in wetland rice culture.

Two field experiments were conducted in Grey-Terrace soil (C.hhlata series) of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm Joydebpur during 1991 Aus (April - August) and Transplant Aman (July-December) seasons. The  soil of  the  experimental  field   was texturaly clay having pH 6.2, organic C 1. 13%. total N 0.09%, available P (Olsen ) 6.5 pp m, exchangeable K 0.21 me/ 100 g. available S 20 ppm and cation exchange capacity (CEC) 20 : 100g. Analyses of the soil were done following some standard procedures. The fertilizer sources used in the trials were: (1) Mixedfertilizer  (7.58-14.44-11.53-4.44% N-P205-K20-S respectively).  (2)  Complex  fertilizer (16- 16-16%   N-P205- K20 respectively). (3) Complex fertilizer  (23-23% N-P205 respectively) and (4) Straight fertilizers (Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum). Mixed  fertilizer was produced  and supplied by Chittagong urea factory. Complex fertilizers were produced in the Netherlands and supplied by local agent. Effort was taken  to  maintain a single rate of nutrients for each of N (70 kg/ ha). P (20 kg/ ha). K (30 kg/ ha) and S (13 kg/ ha). But the doses varied slightly due lo the composition of fertilizer materials. There were six treatments including one absolute control.  The experiment was laid out i n a randomized complete block design with  4 replications. Full dose of P, K and S was applied before transplanting at final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in 3 splits incase of treatments T1 and T5 in  2 splits incase of treatments T2, T3 and T4. In Aus season  30  day-old-seedlings  of  a modern variety rice, BRI (Chandina) were transplanted on the 22nd May, 1991 with a sp.acing of 20 cm X 20 cm. Necessary  intercultural operations were done and supplementary irrigation was provided as and when required. Rice plants were harvested at maturity for grain and straw yields on the 22nd August 1991. During Tranplant Aman season. 50 day old-seedlings of BR22 (Kiron), aphotoperlod sensitive variety were transplanted on the 8th September,1991 in the same plot after harvesting Aus crop. A photoperiod sensitive variety was selected and relatively older seedlings were used In Transplant A ma n season because of delay in transplanting time. Fertilizer doses and application schedules were same In both the seasons. Grain and straw samples were analysed for total N, P  and  K  concentrations following some standard procedures. Sulphur content  of  the  plant samples were also analysed following the method. The data were analysed as per standard statistical procedures.

This study indicates that multinutrient fertilizers either mixed or complex are equally effective as straight fertilizers in increasing grain yield of wetland rice. These fertilizer materials may be good alternatives of straight fertilizers for balanced fertilizer application al farmer's level. Results showed that multinutrient  fertilizers  performed similarly as straight fertilizers in increasing grain yield  of rice. Mineral nutrition of and  nutrient  removal  by rice plants  were also almost similar irrespective of fertilizer  sources.
