Impact of Training on Farmers' Knowledge, Attitude and Adoption of Modern Sugarcane Production Technologies

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Major focus of the study was to determine the impact of training on farmers' knowledge, attitude and adoption of modern sugarcane production technologies. Seven modern sugarcane production technologies namely, proper land selection, variety use, planting time, planting technique, fertilizer use, pest and disease management and intercropping practice were considered in this study. Data were collected through interview schedule from 50 trained and 50 non-trained sample farmers following random sampling technique. Three sugar mills zones namely, Thakurgaon, Setabganj and Pabna and two non-mill zones of Nilphamari and Kurigram districts were studied. The study indicated that the trained farmers showed significantly higher level of knowledge, positive change in attitude and higher level of adoption over the non-trained farmers. The yield increase of sugarcane by trained farmers were comparatively higher at Setabganj (47.0 tlha) over those by the non-trained farmers. Adoption of fertilizer use achieved by the trained farmers was significantly higher than by non-trained farmers and it was the highest adopted technology. The trained farmers achieved significantly higher yield in sugarcane (34.4 t/ha) over non-trained farmers. The study indicated that there was a positive impact of training on farmers' knowledge, attitude, adoption and yield of sugarcane.

Objectives:

To determine the level and comparison of knowledge, attitude, adoption of modern sugarcane production technologies and yield obtained by the trained and non-trained sample farmers.

Methodology:

The study was based on an ex-post-facto research. The total population of this study was 250 from different locations of which 125 were trained and 125 were non-trained sugarcane farmers. Among the trained farmers, 28 were from Thakurgaon, 27 from Setabganj, 25 from Pabna, 24 from Nilphamari and 21 from Kurigram districts. Primary data were collected using interview schedule from a total number of 100 sugarcane farmers, of which 50 received training from BSRI during the period 1993-1997 and the other 50 were non-trained farmers. Ten farmers from each of five locations for both the trained and non-trained groups were selected. Purposive sampling method was followed considering similar socio-economic background. The entire process of collecting data took 3 months in the 1998-99 cropping season. Four parameters namely knowledge, attitude, adoption of modern sugarcane production technologies and yield of sugarcane were considered to analyze the training impact. To determine the impact of training, qualitative parameters like knowledge, attitude and adoption of modern sugarcane production technologies were scored on the basis of trained and non-trained response and then converted to percent. Descriptive statistics such as percentage, range, mean and paired 't' test were used to describe the level and comparison of those parameters of the trained sugarcane farmers.

Achievement/Findings:

The farmers training organized by BSRI had generated positive impacts among the trained farmers. In particular, farmers training has (i) increased the level of technical knowledge on modern sugarcane production technologies, (ii) created favorable attitude towards the modern sugarcane production technologies, and (iii) enhanced higher level of technology adoption. It can be said that the training creates higher level of technical knowledge, favorable attitude and technology adoption which augments sugarcane yield. BSRI organizing and training program. should therefore, strengthening the continue farmers' training program.
