A study to manipulate the alternate bearing habit, harvesting time, increasing yield and quality of mango cv. Gopalbhog was carried out at RARS, Jamalpur during the off year (2011-2012) of Gopalbhog through paclobutrazol. The treatments were paclobutrazol at 1500, 4500, 7500 ppm and control (water application). With increase of concentration total number of panicles increased and control showed very few panicles/plant (45). Paclobutrazol at 7500 ppm resulted in the highest number of panicles/plant (764.33). Paclobutrazol at 1500, 4500 and 7500 ppm maximum fruit retention and produced higher but identical number of fruits (287, 273 and 267 respectively) compared to control (2.00). Paclobutrazol at the highest concentration resulted in the heaviest fruit (161.25g) closely followed by 7500 ppm (161.25g). Paclobutrazol at 1500 ppm had the longest fruit (6.39cm) compared to shortest in control (5.15 cm). Plants treated with paclobutrazol at 7500 ppm demonstrated the highest fruit thickness (5.89 cm). Irrespective of concentration paclobutrazol produced higher yield compared to control. Paclobutrazol at 1500 ppm gave maximum yield (44.50 kg/plant) which was similar to those of 7500 ppm (43.42 kg/plant) and 4500 ppm (38.06 kg/plant). Control plants produced only 1.23 kg fruit per plant.

  1. To manipulate the alternate bearing habit, reducing harvesting time, increasing yield and quality of mango cv. Gopalbhog through paclobutrazol.
  2. To regulate flowering and fruiting and also increase the yield and quality of mango cv. Gopalbhog by the use of paclobutrazol.
  3. To find out the appropriate doses of paclobutrazol on flowering, yield and good quality fruits of mango cv. Gopalbhog.

 

 

The experiment was carried out at the HRC Fruit Farm, RARS, Jamalpur during the fruiting season of 2011-2012. The 11 years old Gopalbhog plants with a plant spacing of 8 x 8 m were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Paclobutrazol at 1500, 4500, 7500 ppm and control (water application) were included in the study as treatments. The solutions of 1500, 4500, 7500 ppm were prepared by dissolving 6, 18 and 30 ml of 25 % paclobutrazol (Syngenta Chem. Co. Ltd., India) into 1 litre of fresh water each respectively. Paclobutrazol treatments were soil drenched according to Burondkar & Gunjate (1993), in which 10 small holes (10–15 cm depth) were prepared in the soil around the collar region of the plants just inside the fertilizer ring. The prepared solutions of paclobutrazol as per treatment uniformly drenched into the wholes on 15 July 2010 and the soil was reworked after application of paclobutrazol. Only water was applied in the control plants. The data of the following parameters were recorded: length of terminal shoot, number of leaves per terminal shoot, leaf area, number of panicles per terminal shoot, length and breadth of panicle, total number of panicles per plant, number of fruits retained per panicle at 10 day intervals starting from pea stage upto harvest, date of harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, fruit length, breadth and thickness, stone and skin weight, yield per plant, shelf life and TSS. The recorded data on different parameters of the experiment were tabulated and analyzed and the treatment means were separated by LSD test at 5 % level of significance.

Plants soil drenched with paclobutrazol was found effective against alternate bearing habit. Irrespective of concentration, soil drench application of paclobutrazol in mango (cv. Gopalbhog) gave maximum fruit retention, fruits per plant, single fruit weight and yield compared to little yield in control.
