Effect of Split Application of Fertilizer on Growth, Yield and Quality of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2010-11 to find out the judicious use of fertilizer for vigorous growth of mango saplings. The plant height, base girth, canopy spreading, number of vegetative flush, number of shoot per flush, shoot length, shoot diameter and number of leaves/shoot of BARI Aam-4 were studied. The tallest plant (330 cm) was recorded in treatment F₁S₄ while the shortest plant (228 cm) in F₂S₄. The maximum base girth (36.00 cm) was observed in treatment F₁S₁ and minimum in F₂S₄ (26.33 cm). The widest north-south and east-west canopy spreading (285cm and 258 cm) in the treatment F₁S₄ where the narrowest spreading (173 cm and 167 cm) in F₂S₄_.The maximum number of vegetative flush (4) was recorded in F₂S_3,F₂S₄andF₃S₃ treatment whilethe minimum (2)was observed in the F₃S₂_. The highest number of shoot per flush was in F₂S₄(59) while the lowest (19) fromF₃S₂_.The longest shoot was 23.78 cm inF₂S₄and the shortest 12.96 cm in F₂S_2.The maximum number ofleaves per shoot (17) was noticed in the treatment F₂S₄and the minimum number in F₁S₁(10).

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate fertilizer dose and time of application for grafted mango plants.
To study the effect of split application of fertilizers on grafted mango for proper growth.
To standardized the effective fertilizer dose for reducing the gestation period of mango.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2010-11. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. One year old veneer grafts were planted in July 2009 at a spacing of 6 m × 6 m. One mango saplings was constituted the unit of plot. Three fertilizer dose considering as factor A :F₁= OM-10 kg, urea-200 g, TSP-200 g, MP- 50 g, gypsum- 50 g F₂= OM-15 kg, urea-250 g, TSP-250 g, MP- 100 g, gypsum- 100 g andF₃= OM-20 kg, urea-300 g, TSP-300 g, MP- 150 g, gypsum- 150 g. Four times of application considering as factor B : S₁= 2 times of split application, S₂= 3 times of split application, S₃= 4 times of split application and S₄= 6 times of split application. Intercultural operations such as weeding, ploughing and irrigation were done when necessary. Agromethrin 10 EC @ 1 ml per litre of water was applied to control mango leaf cutting weevil at the time of each vegetative flush. Data on tree growth as well as number of vegetative flush and number of terminal leaves per shoots were recorded and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the growth condition of mango plant the treatment F₁S₄ showed superior performance in the studied parameter but maximum vegetative flush and shoot was recorded in the treatment F₂S₂_.
