Effect of Fertilizers on Harvesting Time, Yield and Quality of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of fertilizer on harvesting time, yield and quality of mango, was studied at RARS, Jamalpur during 2011-12 to determine the effect of fertilizer on harvesting time, yield and quality of mango (BARI Aam-2). Three fertilizer doses; 100%, 150% and 200% of the fertilizer dose mentioned in Fertilizer recommendation guide and control (no fertilizer) along with two installments of applications were included in the study. Irrespective of fertilizer dose fruits were harvested at 15 June, while fruits were harvested at first of July from untreated control plant. Plants received fertilizer at 150% exhibited maximum number of fruits per plant (259) as against minimum number of fruits (26.00) in control. Plants treated with 150% of fertilizer dose noted maximum yield per plant (76.11 kg) as compared to minimum yield per plant in untreated control plant (6.60 kg). Two installments of application showed higher no. of fruits (185) and yield (47.29 Kg/plant) as compared to three installments. The treatment combination 150% of fertilizer along with two installments produced the highest number of fruits per plant (277) as compared to the lowest fruits in control treatment (22.00). The treatment combination of 150% fertilizer dose and three installments of application resulted in the highest yield (78.70 kg/plant) as against the lowest yield in control (5.50 kg/plant).

Objectives:

To study the effects of fertilizer for prolonged harvest time, uniformity in bearing, increased yield as well as quality attributes of mango.
To study the interaction effect of split application of fertilizers along with time of application on mango.
To standardized the effective fertilizer dose and time of application for harvest time, yield and quality attributes of mango

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Farm of HRC, RARS, Jamalpur during the period from September 2011 to June 2012. BARI Aam –2 was included in the study as variety. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (Factorial) with three replications. Four doses of fertilizer i.e 100%, 150% and 200% of the fertilizer dose mentioned in Fertilizer Recommendation Guide (Cowdung-22 kg/pant, Urea- 760 g/plant, TSP- 410 g/plant, MOP- 260 g/plant, Gypsum- 280 g/plant and ZnSO₄-30 g/plant) and control (no fertilizer) along with two installments of applications i.e. two installments (the first one applied on 15 September and the another one on 15 March), three installments (the first one applied on 15 September, the second one on 15 March and the third and last one on 15 May) were included in the study. Adequate care and management of the plants under the experiment was taken as per requirement. The data of the following parameters; date of harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breadth, fruit thickness, stone and skin weight, yield and TSS were recorded. The recorded data on different parameters of the experiments were tabulated and analyzed with appropriate design of experiment (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) adopting a statistical programme MSTAT-C. All the treatment means were separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 1% and 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Plants treated with 150% of fertilizer dose mentioned in Fertilizer Recommendation Guide (Cowdung-22 kg/pant, Urea- 760 g/plant, TSP- 410 g/plant, MOP- 260 g/plant, Gypsum- 280 g/plant and ZnSO₄-30 g/plant) following either two or three installments produced the highest number of fruits per plant and yield as compared to the lowest fruits and yield in control treatment. Among the treated plants date of harvest was found earlier than untreated control.
