Effect of Planting Time on Growth and Yield of Strawberry Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of five Strawberry lines planted at four different times viz. 01 September, 01 October, 01 November and 01 December at the Fruit Research Farm, HRC, BARI, Gazipur were studied during September 2011 to April 2012. For early plantation FA 005 performed better in respect of fruits/plant, fruit weight, size and yield. But this performance gradually declined by delaying of planting. On the other hand FA 006 and FA 007 exhibited satisfactory performance in respect of fruits/plant, fruit size and weight as well as fruit yield at every time of planting. Fruits/plant, fruit weight and yield per plant of BARI- Strawberry-1, FA 005 and FA 008 were reduced sharply by late planting but those were reduced tidily for FA 006 and FA 007 by late planting. Days to harvest varied from 88.33 days in BARI Strawberry-1 planted at 01 October to 119.00 days in FA 007 planted at 01 November. Yield/plant was found maximum in FA 005 (667.22 g/plant) followed by FA 006 (630.75 g/plant) planted at 01 October were statistically higher than that of other, while BARI Strawberry-1 (79.72 g/plant produced the lowest yield when planted in 01 December.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable planting time as well as interaction between time of planting and cultivar for better growth and yield of promising strawberry genotypes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur, during August 2011 to April 2012. One released variety (BARI Strawberry-1) and 4 promising genotypes of strawberry were included in the experiment. There were four planting time viz. 01 October, 01 November, 01 December and 01 January. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block (RCB) Design with three replications. The unit plot consisted of a raised bed of 2.5 m x 1.0 m size accommodating 10 plants in double row system at 50 cm x 45 cm spacing. The runners of strawberry plant were planted in the field. The land was fertilized with decomposed cow dung, urea, TSP, and MP @ 75 ton, 650 kg, 500 kg and 600 kg per hectare, respectively. All the cow dung, TSP and half of MP were applied during bed preparation total urea and rest of MP were applied in 5 equal splits at 20 days interval starting from 15 days after planting. Straw mulch was used to minimize soil temperature, conserve soil moisture, control weeds and keep the fruits off the soil. Flood irrigation was applied following fertilizer application as and when necessary. Runners of strawberry plants were removed 2/3 days after emergence. Weeding, spraying of insecticides and fungicides were done as and when necessary. Fully ripen fruits were harvested and data on different parameters were recorded and the mean data were presented after analyzing following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:

For early plantation FA 005 performed better in respect of fruits per plant and yield. But this performance gradually declined by delaying of planting. On the other hand FA 006 and FA 007 exhibited satisfactory performance in respect of fruits per plant, fruit size and weight as well as fruit yield at every time of planting even in last date of planting. Considering this FA 005 was recommended for early genotypes and FA 006 and FA 007 as suitable for mid or late season.
