Effect of Organic Manure on Growth and Yield of Strawberry

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at RARS, Jessore during 2011-12 to find out the effect of organic manure on strawberry. Five treatments viz. T₁ = cocodust @ 10 t/ha + Recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (RDCF), T₂ = cocodust @ 15 t/ha + RDCF, T₃ = cocodust @ 20 t/ha + RDCF, T₄ = cowdung @ 15 t/ha + RDCF and T₅ = Control (RDCF) were used in the experiment. Growth and yield of strawberry was not significantly influenced by the treatments. The longest plant was obtained from the treatment T₃ (22.53 cm) followed by T₂ (21.13 cm) and the shortest from T₅ (18.33 cm). The total number of leaves/plant was recorded the highest in the treatment T₃ (22). Maximum numbers of fruits/plant were produced by T₁ and T₄ treatment (19) and minimum from T₂, T₃ and T₅ (17). Fruit length was the highest in T₄ (3.79 cm) and the lowest in T₅ (3.42 cm). The highest TSS was obtained from the treatment T₁ (11.13 %) followed by T₄ (10.73%), while the lowest in T₅ (9.63%). The highest yield was recorded from T₄ (301.43 g/plant) followed by T₂ (257.30 g/plant) and the lowest yield was obtained from T₁ (212.43 g/plant).

Objectives:

To study the effect of different doses of organic manure on the yield and yield components of strawberry.
To study the different physical and chemical properties of soil by using organic fertilizer in strawberry.
To find out the appropriate doses of organic fertilizer along with chemical fertilizer on yield and yield components of strawberry.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during rabi season of 2010-2011 to find out the effect of organic manure on strawberry. Well decomposed cowdung and cocodust were used as organic manures in combination with recommended dose of chemical fertilizers. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Unit plot size was 1.5 m x 1.0 m maintaining 50 cm x 30 cm plant spacing. The saplings were transplanted in the field on 19 November 2011.The treatments were as :T₁ = cocodust @ 10 t/ha + recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (RDCF), T₂ = cocodust @ 15 t/ha + RDCF,T₃=cocodust @ 20 t/ha + RDC,T₄ = cowdung @ 15 t/ha + RDCF, and T₅ = Control (RDCF),Chemical fertilizers at the rate of Urea ( 250 kg/ha ), TSP ( 200 kg/ha) , MoP( 220 kg/ha), Gypsum (125 kg/ha), Boric acid (12 kg/ha 0 and ZnO ( 6 kg/ha) were used in he experiment.The entire amount of cow dung, coir pith, TSP and gypsum were applied in the plot during final land preparation. Urea and MOP were applied in three equal installments starting from 20 days after planting. Flood irrigation was applied after fertilizer application and during drought period. Runners of strawberry were removed time to time. Weeding and fungicide spray were done as and when necessary. Fully ripen fruits were harvested from each unit plot and data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the treatments of organic fertilizer the treatment combination of T₄ (cowdung @ 15 t/ha + recommended dose of chemical fertilizers) performed better in respect of number of fruits per plant and yield.
