Yield and Quality of Strawberry as Influenced by Planting Time and Mulches Under High Rainfall Area of Jaintapur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of BARI Strawberry- 1 was evaluated under different planting time and mulches at the Citrus Research Station, Jaintapur, Sylhet during 2011-2012. In case of combined effects, significant difference was found regarding all the parameters studied, however plant height, spreading, number of leaves/plant, number of flower truss/plant and number of flowers/truss were found the highest under 1^st October planting in combination with straw mulch. Plants of 15^th October planting under control exhibited early flowering (70.67 days), while the delayed flowering was found in 1^st October planting in combination with water hyacinth mulch (90.83). Number of fruits/plant performed the highest (21.00) in 15^th October with control followed by 1^st November with straw mulch (20.17) and the lowest in 1^st November with control (12.00). However 1^st November with straw mulch produced the highest fruit weight (21.26 g), TSS content (12.32%), yield/plant (292.7 g) and yield (13.17 t/ha).

Objectives:

To study the effect of different doses of organic manure on the yield and yield components of strawberry.
To study the different physical and chemical properties of soil by using organic fertilizer in strawberry.
To find out the appropriate doses of organic fertilizer along with chemical fertilizer on yield and yield components of strawberry.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Citrus Research Station, Jaintapur, Sylhet during September 2011 to May 2012 to find out the effect of planting time and different mulches on growth, yield and quality of strawberry. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Unit plot size was 1.5 m x 1.0 m maintaining 50 cm x 30 cm plant spacing. The saplings were transplanted in the field according to the planting time from 1^st October to 1^st November 2011 at an interval of 15 days. Four Planting time considering as factor A :P₁ = 1^st October, P₂ = 15^th October, P₃ = 1^st November and P₄ = 15^th November. Five mulch materials considering as factor B: M₁ = Straw mulch, M₂ = Water hyacinth mulch, M₃ = Black polythene mulch, M₄ = White polythene mulch and M₅ = No mulch (Control).The land was fertilized with decomposed cow dung, urea, TSP, and MP @ 75 ton, 650 kg, 500 kg and 600 kg per hectare, respectively. All the cow dung, TSP and half of MP were applied during bed preparation total urea and rest of MP were applied in 5 equal splits at 20 days interval starting from 15 days after planting. Straw mulch was used to minimize soil temperature, conserve soil moisture, control weeds and keep the fruits off the soil. Flood irrigation was applied following fertilizer application as and when necessary. Runners of strawberry plants were removed 2/3 days after emergence. Weeding, spraying of insecticides and fungicides were done as and when necessary. Fully ripen fruits were harvested and data on different parameters were recorded and the mean data were presented after analyzing following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:

Under the high rainfall area like Jaintapur, planting at 1^st November with straw mulch performed better regarding fruits per plant, single fruit weight, TSS and yield and might be recommended for strawberry cultivation in this area.
