Evaluation of Some Intercrops Under Mango Orchard at North-weste Part of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the yield potential of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), taro (Colocasia esculanta ) and ginger (Zingiber officinale L.) as intercrop in established mango orchard at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj during 2001-2002. Intercrops were grown under full shade, partial shade and full sun conditions (Control). Germination of turmeric and taro were the maximum in full shade conditions while ginger's germination was the maximum in control plots. All intercrops grown under full shade conditions took minimum days for germination as compared to partial shade and control. Maximum growth of ginger and taro was recorded in partial and full shade plots while that of turmeric showed the maximum in partial shade plots. The highest number of tiller was recorded in turmeric while it was grown in control plots. Weight and size of cormels or rhizome were the minimum in full shade conditions in all intercrops under investigation. The maximum yield of turmeric was obtained from control plots while in taro and ginger it was obtained from partial shade plots.

Objectives:

To study the feasibility of growing taro and shade loving turmeric and ginger in vacant spaces of established mango orchard.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted under rainfed condition at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj during May 2001 to January 2002. A mango orchard (var. Ashwina) of 45-50 years old was selected for this study. The soils belong to Gangetic floodplain having a pH value of 6.5. Healthy rhizomes of turmeric and ginger and corms of taro were selected as planting materials. Turmeric variety 'BARI Holud -1' taro variety 'BARI Mukhikochu -I' and a local cultivar of ginger were planted in furrows on May 10, 200I. The planting rows were ridged after emergence of plants. The crops were fertilized and other cultural operations were done as recommended. Plant protection measures were taken as per necessity to get better yield. Three types of conditions viz. full shade, partial shade and a control (no shade) were selected in the mango orchard. A full shade treatment represents a land, which received whole day shade, while the partial shade represents a space that received about 4 hours (10 A.M. to 2 P.M) sunshine only during noon while the control plots received whole day sunshine. The unit plot size was 2 X 8 m (16 m The design of the experiment was RCBD. The treatments were replicated three times. Taro was harvested on November 11,2001 while turmeric and ginger were harvested on January 22, 2002 when most of the foliage dried up. Data on germination of corm and rhizome, days required for germination, plant growth, number of tiller per hill and finally yield of inter crops were taken after harvest. Plant height indicating growth of intercrops was recorded at 10 days interval from germination up to August 30, 200I.

Achievement/Findings:
