Studies on Retting and Fibre Properties of Recently Released Varieties of Jute (c. Capsularis and C. Olitorius)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was undertaken to assess the retting and fibre properties of two recently released of each of C. capsularis and C. olitorius jute. It was conducted at four locations of BJRI such as JAES, Jagir, Manikgonj, Jute Research Regional Station at Faridpur, Chandina and Sub-station Monirampur during the period of 2013-2014. The results showed that newly released variety BJRI deshi pat-8 significantly gained more yield in Manikgonj and Monirampur than the check variety CVL-1. But the cutting percentage was higher in the newly released variety than the check variety at four locations. In case of olitorius jute, newly released variety BJRI tossa pat-6 yielded the higher amount of jute fibre than the check variety (BJRI tossa pat-4) in all the four locations. Fibre colour of olitorius was golden to light golden and capsularis was whitish to light cream in appearance. Retting period varies from 15-19 days for both newly released jutes.

Objectives:

To assess the retting and fiber properties of newly released two varieties of C. capsularis and C. olitorius jute with respective control.

Methodology:

The newly released deshi jute BJRI deshi pat-8 and BJRI tossa pat-6 were grown along with the check varieties viz. CVL-1 and BJRI tossa jute-4 respectively under identical conditions following same agricultural practices in Jute Research Regional station at Faridpur, Chandina, Sub-station Monirampur and JAES, Jagir, Manikgonj. Plants of each newly released and the check varieties were harvested at the age of 110-120 days. After harvesting the jute plants were retted in identical conditions. Fibres were extracted, washed, dried and analyzed in respect of colour, strength, percentage of cuttings etc.

Achievement/Findings:

In both cases (Deshi and Tossa jute), fibre yields were higher in newly released variety than the check variety. But cutting percentage was slightly higher in newly released variety than the check variety used in this experiment.
