Genetic Variability, Correlation and Path-coefficient Analysis in Watermelon

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty one genotypes of watermelon (Cetrullus lanatus (Thunb) Mnsf.) showed a wide range of variability for days to first fruit harvest, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruits/plant, brix (%), rind thickness and fruit yield/plant. Fruit yield had high positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with number of fruits/plant and fruit diameter. Number of fruits/plant and fruit diameter also effect fruit yield directly. The results indicate that for increasing fruit yield, selection should be based on plants having more number of fruits with larger diameter.

Objectives:

An attempt has been made to find out (i) the genetic variability in a collections from Japan, U.S.A. and Bangladesh, and (ii) the association of yield contributing characters with yield. No such study seems to have been conducted so far.

Methodology:

The materials consisted of 25 hybrids and six open pollinated variety obtained from Japan, U.S.A. and Bangladesh. The investigation was conducted at the Citrus and Vegetable Seed Research Center of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 1986-87. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 10.5m x 3.0m accommodating seven plants at 1.5m apart in single row. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental plots. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 5 kg cowdung, 30 g urea, 40 g T.S.P. and 20 g M.P. in each pit seven days before transplantation. All cultural operations were done as and when required. The observations were recorded on individual plant basis from five plants, leaving one plant on each side in the row. The characters studied were days to first fruit harvest, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruits brix percent, rind thickness and fruit yield. Genotypic (S²g) and phenotypic (S²p) varianees were estimated according to the formula of Burton and De Vane (1953). Genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) coefficients of variation, broad sense heritability (Hb), genetic advance in per cent of mean (GA) and correlation coefficients were determined using the formula given Singh and Chaudhury (1985). The path coefficient analysis was done as suggested by Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded from the results that number of fruits per plant, fruit length and fruit diameter had high genotypic coefficient of variation, higher heritability and high genetic advance in percent of mean as well as high positive direct effects on fruit yield per plant. Therefore, maximum weightage should be given to these characters for the improvement of yield in watermelon
