Variability and Character Association in Turmeric (curcuma Longa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Variability and the association of different characters with yield were determined in 30 cultivars of turmeric during kharif, 1984. Estimates of variability, broad sense heritability, genetic advance, and correlations were done. Path coefficient analysis was performed to determine the direct and indirect effects of component characters on yield. Heritability estimates were high for all the characters studied with the exception of leaf breadth and finger diameter. Plant height had the highest genetic advance followed by leaf length and yield per plant. A strong positive association of yield per plant with finger and corm diameter suggest that phenotypic selection could he made on the basis of these two characters. Corm diameter was significantly and positively correlated with leaf length, plant height, and finger diameter. The direct effect of plat height, finger and corm diameter were positive and quite high suggesting that an increase in finger and corm diameter with longer plant types will increase the yield per plant.

Objectives:

This study was undertaken with the objective of studying the variability and establishing the criteria of selection for higher yield.

Methodology:

Thirty genotypes of turmeric were grown at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during the Kharif season of 1984. The soil is predominantly sandy loam belonging to Grey Piedmont type having a PH of 5.7. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.8m. The distance between the rows and the plants was 45cm and 20cm, respectively. The crop was fertilized with recommended manure and fertilizers. All other usual cultural practices such as irrigation, weeding, and earthing up were done as and when necessary to get good growth and development of the experimental materials. Ten plants were selected at random from unit plots for recording data on the following characters: leaf number per plant, leaf length, leaf breadth, plant height, sucker number per plant, finger diameter, corm diameter, and fresh yield (finger + corm) per plant. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were calculated according to Burton and DeVane (1953). Broad sense heritability estimates and genetic gain were calculated following Hanson et al. (1956) and Johnson et al. (1955), respectively. Correlations were done according to the method suggested by Panse and Sukhatme (1957), while path coefficient analysis were made according to Dewey and Lu (1959).

Therefore, in conclusion, based on path coefficient analysis, the desirable characters that could be used for selecting turmeric for higher yields are bigger finger and corm diameters with longer plant types.
