Influence of Boron, Copper and Molybdenum on Grain Formation in Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two parameters of wheat-number of filled grains per spike and grain yield responded significantly to the treatments used. The effect of treatments on other agronomic characters viz. tillers/hill, spike length, spikelets/spike and straw yield was insignificant. The use of B caused a higher formation of grains resulting in higher grain yield, compared to Cu, Mo or control treatments. Soil dressing was found to be a better method of fertilizer application over foliar spray. Crop response to B varied considerably from one location to another.

Objectives:

An objective of studying the effects of B, Cu and Mo on grain formation in wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was set up during rabi season of 1989-90 at three locations of the country. The locations were BAU farm, Mymensingh; On-Farm Research Division (OFRO, BARI), Rangpur & Wheat Research Centre (WRC, BARI), Dinajpur. Wheat is reported to be grown better in Dinajpur- Rangpur area, which experiences cold weather ranging from 16-20^oC during most of wheat growth period. The BAU farm was brought under investigation for conveniece of close observation. The experimental field at BAU farm belongs to Sonatala Soil Series under the AEZ (agroecological region) Old Brahmaputra Floodplain; the Rangpur field belongs to Pirgacha Series under Tists Meander Foodplain, and the Dinajpur soil to Baliadangi Series under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain. The variety used was 'Kanchan' having single gene semi-dwarf characteristics. There were 13 treatments comprising B, Cu and Mo. applied in two methods---soil application and foliar spray. In the case of soil application (designated as sa), the dose of nutrient was 3 kg/ha while for foliar spray (fs) the concentration levels were 100, 200 and 400 ppm for every element under study. A basal dose of 100 kg N, 60 kg P₂0₅, 40 kg K₂O and 20kg S per hectare was applied in every plot. The sources used for B, Cu and Mo were H₃B0₃, CuS0₄, 5H₂O and Na₂Mo0₄, 2H₂O, respectively. Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were employed as sources for N,P,K and S respectively. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with 4 replications. The plot size was 5m x 2.5m.

Achievement/Findings:

Boron deficiency might be a major cause of grain-unfilling in wheat. Both BAU farm and Rangpur BARI-station need boron supplement for efficient wheat production. In wheat Research Centre at Dinajpur little improvement can be possible if all the three nutrients ( B, Cu & Mo ) are togetherly applied.
