An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the T. aman season 1999 to investigate the effects of planting time and seedling number on growth, yield and yield components of hybrid rice. Three hybrid rice varieties - Sonar BangIa I, Loknath503 and Aalok6201; three planting times-30 July, 15 August and 30 August and two levels of seedling number viz., I and 2 per hill were used. The highest number of tillers/hill was observed in Loknath503. Plant height, non bearing tillers per hill, panicle length, spikelets per panicle and sterile spikelets per panicle were the maximum in Aalok6201, whereas Loknath503 produced the maximum number of tillers and panicles per hill. Higher grain yield was recorded in 30 July planting due to higher number of panicles per hill and 1000 grain weight compared to that of 15 and 30 August planting. The highest grain and straw yield were obtained in 30 July transplanting which was at par with those in 15 August planting. There was no significant yield difference between I and 2 seedlings per hill. Sonar Bangla l transplanted on 30 July with I seedling per hill performed the best in respect of grain yield compared to Aalok6201 and Loknath503.

To investigate the effect of planting time and number of seedling/hill on growth and yield of hybrid rice.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during T. aman season (June to December), 1999. The soil of the experimental unit belongs to the Sonatola Series of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ-9), a non- calcareous dark grey floodplain soil and sandy loam in texture. Soil pH value ranges from 5.9 to 6.5. Three rice varieties viz. Sonar Bangla I, Loknath503 and Aalok6201; three planting time viz. 30 July, 15 August and 30 August; two levels of seedling(s)/hill (I and 2) were used arranged in a split-split plot design with four replications. Unit plot size of 4 x 2.5 m. Variety was assigned in the main plot, planting time in sub plot and number of seedlings to sub-sub plots. The whole experimental area was first divided into 4 blocks. Each block was then divided into 3 main plots to accommodate variety at random. Each main plot was then divided into 3 sub plots where the planting time treatments were randomly distributed. Each sub plot was divided into 2 sub-sub plots where number of seedlings/hill treatment was randomly distributed. Sprouted seeds of the three hybrid rice were sown in the wet seedbed on 5 July, 20 July and 5 August 1999. The main land was fertilized with urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and zinc sulfate @ 125,30,60,20 and 5.4 kg N, P, K, S and Zn/ha, respectively. Entire amount of TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulfate were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal splits at final land preparation, at the tillering stage (21 DAT) and at the panicle initiation stage (42 DAT). Twenty five day old seedlings were transplanted on 30 July, 15 August and 30 August 1999 as per treatments with 20 cm x 15 cm spacing. Weeding was done twice by hand pulling on 15 and 30 DAT. Basudin 10G @ 20 kg/ha was applied to control rice stem borer at tillering stage (30 DAT). For grain and straw yield, 5 m2 area was harvested from each plot. Sonar Bangla 1 was harvested on 30 October, 13 November and 25 November 1999. Loknath503 and Aalok6201 were harvested on 8 November, 20 November and 30 November 1999. Grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content. Data on tillers and yield components were recorded from 16 selected hills in each plot. Data were analyzed statistically using "Analysis of variance" Technique and the differences among treatment means were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

On the basis of the experimental results, it can be concluded that Sonar Bangla I was the best in respect of grain yield and transplanting between 30 July and 15 August at 1 seedling/hill is suitable for better yield.
