Insect Pests Attacking Mangrove Nurseries and Plantations of Keora (sonneratia Apetala) Along the Costal Belt of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The costal afforestation programme of Bangladesh has come into being primarily to reduce the effect of cyclones and tidal surges by creating a protective belt of mangrove forests along the coast of Bangladesh. Up to 1994 nearly 127,000 ha has been planted up, of which about 94% is covered with keora (Sonneratia apetala Buch.-Ham), mostly in monoculture. For the last few years, Keora nurseries and plantations have been found attacked by various insect pests causing considerable damage. Surveys conducted at different locations revealed a rich pest spectrum of defoliators, borers, sap suckers and bark-eaters. So far 19 species of insects belonging to the order Lepidoptea (13 species), Coleoptera (four species) and Homoptera (two species) have been recorded. The status of these pests, their nature of damage and distribution have been provided in this study.

Objectives:

i) To determine the status of the pests.

ii) To determine the nature of damage and distribution of the pest

iii) To gather information on the biology and ecology of the pest

Methodology:

General observations on pest incidence were made by periodic surveys in several nurseries and plantations raised in the coastal areas and offshore islands in the Bay of Bengal. Initial observations were made in 1983, followed by more or less regular observations over a period of seven years from 1985 to 1992. Occasional observations were also made on keora stands in the Sunderbans natural mangroves forests. During the surveys insects associated with keora were collected, reared in the laboratory when necessary, preserved and identified.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study were recorded in all 19 species of insects attacking standing, nature of damage, locality of occurrence and their pest status of Sonneratia apetala in Bangladesh. Excepting Z. conferta all were perhaps the first record of insects affecting standing keora trees.
