Effect of Irrigation and Sulphur on Npks Content and Yield of Onion (allium Cepa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during rabi season of 2002-2003 to investigate the effect of irrigation and sulphur fertilization on the yield, NPKS content and uptake of onion. The N, P, K and S content increased gradually with increasing level of irrigation as well as sulphur. The lowest value of N, P, K and S content was observed in I₀ plots. K content in onion was not affected significantly due to irrigation and sulphur fertilizer treatments. The yield of onion increased with increasing levels of both irrigation and sulphur. The highest average yield (12.92 t ha^-1) was obtained through application of five irrigations (I₃). On the other hand, application of 30 kg S ha^-1 gave the highest bulb yield of 11.69 t ha^-1.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University farm, Gazipur in the Rabi season of 2002-2003. The soil of the experimental site was siIty clay loam belonging to the Salna series of Shallow Red Brown Terrace Soil. The area represents the agro ecological zone of Madhupur Tract (AEZ 28). As onion possesses shallow root system, the characterization of the soil for some pertinent physico-chemical properties was kept limited within 15 cm depth. The experimental soil had bulk density of 1.40 g/cc, and particle density of 2.62 g/cc and pH of 6.2. The soil contains organic C 0.89 %, total N 0.09%, available P 22μg/g, available K 0.095 meq/100g soil, and S level 16.212μg/g soil. There was a total of 113.8 mm rainfall during the growing period (24^th December 2002 to 5^th April 2003). The mean monthly maximum temperature for the months in December 2002, January, February, March and April 2003 were 22.87, 17.88,23.78,28.76 and 30.25 °C, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Four irrigation treatments were arranged as main plots (such as lo=No irrigation 'control', I₁=Irrigation at IW /CPE ratio of 0.4, I₂= Irrigation at IW/CPE ratio of 0.8 and I₃= Irrigation at IW/CPE ratio of 1.2) and four sulphur doses as sub-plots (So= No application of S 'control', S₁ = Application of S at the rate of 15 kg ha^-1, S₂ = Application of S at the rate of 30 kg ha^-I and S₃ = Application of S at the rate of 45 kg ha^-1). Forty day old, healthy and uniform onion seedlings of cultivar Taherpuri were transplanted on 24^th December, 2002 maintaining row to row and plant to plant spacing of 20 cm and 10 cm, respectively. The seedlings were watered immediately after transplanting. The size of each plot was 2.4 X 2.0 m having a plot to plot and block to block spacing of 1.0 m and 1.5 m, respectively. Well decomposed cowdung @ 10 tha^-1 was applied during final land preparation. The crop was fertilized with 120 kg N ha^-1, 40 kg P ha^-1, 75 kg K ha^-1 and 5 kg Zn ha^-1 as Urea, TSP, MP, and ZnO, respectively. Sulpher was applied as Gypsum. N was applied in three equal splits. Half of N and full amount of other fertilizers were applied 2 days prior to transplanting and thoroughly mixed with the soil. The remaining half of N was applied in two equal splits at 20 and 40 days after transplanting. Fixed amount of irrigation water was applied (3 cm) to meet the fraction of cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) as per treatment through calibrated hosepipe. Pan evaporation data were recorded everyday and cumulative figures were calculated subtracting the rainfall. When the ratio between irrigation water (lW) and cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) attained the ratio prefixed for a particular treatment, it was considered as the time of its irrigation. Samplings were made at 50, 70 and 90 days after transplanting (DAT). At each sampling, 10 plants were randomly taken from each plot. The bulbs of each plot were harvested on April 5, 2003 and yields were recorded. The samples of each plot were oven dried at 70°C for 72 hours. Dried plant materials were ground and processed for determination of N, P, K and S content. Total nitrogen content was determined by microkjeldahl method. Total phosphorus content was determined by Venadomolibdate yellow color method and total potassium content by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Total sulphur was determined by Turbidimetric method. Total uptake of N, P, K and S were computed using N, P, K and S content and yield data. The collected data were analyzed statistically using MSTAT.

Achievement/Findings:

The finding of the present investigation indicate that onion yield depends not only on the total irrigation but also on the distribution of total irrigation during the growing season. Number and timing is important criteria for irrigation scheduling. Five irrigations at 22, 36,49, 64 and 76 DAT may be applied to obtain expected yield of onion in Shallow Red-Brown Terrace soil.
