Yield Stability of Wheat Genotypes Grown Under Different Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Phenotypic stability of 16 wheat genotypes for grain yield was assessed through regression and deviation from regression analysis. The estimates of stability parameters (b and s²d) revealed that the solitary genotype BAW 53 showed greater b value and out yielded the grand mean indicating its suitability for favorable environment (irrigated optimum sowing). The genotypes BAW 56, and BAW 60, showed b values less than unity, minimum s²d and higher mean yield indicating their suitability [or less favorable environments (rainfed optimum and irrigated late sowing). But the genotypes, BAW 59, Kanchon and Akbar having almost unit regression coefficient, minimum deviation from regression and greater mean values indicate that such entries might be considered fairly stable in yield performance across the growing conditions

Objectives:

Therefore, the present investigation was an attempt to identify stable genotypes for different growing situations of wheat in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Sixteen genotypes of wheat (BAW 53, BAW 55, BAW 56, BAW 59, BAW 60, BAW 61, BAW 63, BAW 64, BAW 65, BAW 71, BAW 72, BAW 74, Sonalika, Kanchon, Agrani and Akbar) were tested under four growing environments viz., rainfed optimum (El), rainfed late (E2), irrigated optimum (E3) and irrigated late (E4). The trial was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replications having 50m² plot in each growing conditions at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur, Bangladesh during the winter season of 1988-89. For raising a good crop normal cultivation practices were followed. Observation recorded on grain yield per plot was subjected to stability analysis. The statistical approaches suggested by Eberhart and Russell (1966) was followed for estimating stability parameters. According to them, a stable genotype may be considered as one having average linear regression (b = 1) to environments of varying levels of productivity and deviation from regression as close to zero

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes which produced higher grain yield than grand mean were BAW 53, BAW 56, BAW 59, BAW 60, BAW 61, BAW 71, Kanchon, Agrani and Akbar. For grain yield the regression coefficient of BAW 53, BAW 63, BAW 65, BAW 71 and BAW 72 were greater than unity, suggesting below average stability and responsiveness to favorable environments. Out of these genotypes only BAW 53 and BAW 71 produced higher grain yield than grand mean and BAW 53 had comparatively lower value of deviation from regression. Thus it may be suggested that BAW 53 may be recommended for cultivation to favorable environment. BAW 59, BAW 61, BAW 64, Kanchon, Agrani and Akbar had regression value closed to 1. While deviation from regression values were minimum for BAW 59, Kanchon and Akbar. So it could be concluded that these three lines may be identified as fairly stable lines. The rest of the high yielding genotypes, BAW 56 and BAW 60 showing regression co-efficient less than unity and comparatively lower s²d value might be suitable for poor environments.
