A Qualitative Survey of Wood Decay Fungi of Timber in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 1887 specimens of wood decay fungi were collected from 104 host trees and 30 unidentified logs. Out of these 67 species under 28 genera were identified. Collected specimens were cultured on locally developed 4% sugarcane gur agar (GA) medium. The present investigation provides a list of wood decaying fungi of Bangladesh so far identified their hosts.

Objectives:

i) To develop a national references collection of wood-decay fungi

ii) To prepare a monograph of wood-decay fungi available in the forests and on timber in use

iii) To develop suitable preventive and/or remedial control measures

Methodology:

Survey and collection of wood decay fungi in felled wood and on timber in use and on living trees were carried out. Isolation, identification and preparation of illustration of collected wood decay fungi were done. Remedial control measures were devised.

Achievement/Findings:

Forest trees and timbers would be saved from wood decay fungi attack. A bulletin titled “Wood decay fungi on forest trees and timber of Bangladesh” has published. Sixty seven species covering 28 genera of wood-decay fungi were identified and listed.
