Gene effects and heterosis were estimated through the study of generation means in countrybean. The mean values of different generations revealed that late flowering, longer pod length and wider pod breadth were partially dominant over early flowering, shorter pod length, and narrower pod breath, while protein content was dominant over lower estimates of the character. The three parameter model failed to account for the variation in generation means in all the characters. Six parameter model indicated that additive type of gene effect was important for earliness, pod length and pod breadth. However, epistatic interactions were indicated for pod length and pod breadth. Additive, dominance effects and epistasis were found for protein content of which dominance gene effect was predominant. Days to flowering showed significant positive heterosis along with negligible inbreeding depression in F2. But negative heterosis was observed for pod size and protein content. Pod breadth showed significant inbreeding depression.

Therefore,the present investigation was undertaken to estimate the gene effects and heterosis of some characters in countrybean.

 

The materials used in the study were two pure lines of countrybean (Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet) of which CB - 002 is a locally adapted photo and thermosensitive cultivar having large pod size and low protein content in green pod and CB -003, an exotic line introduced from Japan, is a photo and thermo insensitive line having small pod size with high protein content in green pod. For estimating gene effects intervarietal crosses between the above two lines were made and other generations like BC1, BC2 and F2 were produced. All the six generations viz, PI, P2, F1 BC1, BC2 and F2 were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the experimental farm of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Gazipur, Bangladesh in 1987. In each replication 5 plants of each parent, 10 plants of F1 20 plants of each back cross and 50 plants of F2 were grown. Data were collected on individual plant basis for days to flowering, pod length and pod breadth. For protein content, 4 plant for each parent, 5 plants for F1 10 plants for each back cross and 30 plants for F2 were randomly selected per replication for collection of pods at the age of 15 days. Pods were dried at 75OC for 24 hours and ground properly. Total nitrogen analysis was done following Kjeldahl methods and then protein percent was calculated by multiplying total nitrogen with 6.25. The statistical analysis was conducted for generation means and variances as suggested by Mather (1949). Since three parameter model was inadequate the data were subjected to six parameter model as suggested by Hayman (1958) and Jinks and Jones (1958). Heterosis was calculated in increase of F1 over better parent. Inbreeding depression was calculated from the deviation of F1 mean over F2 mean.

The heterotic response of F1s over better parent and inbreeding depression of F2 over F1 are calculated. The cross showed significant positive heterosis for earliness. But pod length and protein content showed significant negative heterosis over better parent which were undesirable. Protein content showed significant negative heterosis over better parent which again indicated that dominance gene effects played predominant role for controlling this character. It is interesting that the character days to flowering showed significant heterosis over better parent even when h and other non-allelic interaction components were non-significant. Such heterosis probably occurred due to the dispersion of the incomplete dominant genes. Out of five crosses of Lathyrus for protein content,  Significant inbreeding depression was found in pod breadth.
