Comparative Study of Yield and Yield Parameters of BJRI and Exotic Tossa Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at different research station of BJRI during 2013 jute season to evaluate the exotic varieties of tossa jute in comparison to BJRI varieties in respect of fiber yield and yield contributing characters. BJRI varieties (viz. O-9897, BJRI Tossa pat-4, BJRI Tossa pat-5) and exotic variety (viz. JRO-524,) was tested materials. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Significant yield differences were observed among the varieties and different locations. Results revealed that the average highest fibre yield (3.03 t ha^-1) was recorded in BJRI Tossa pat-4 and BJRI Tossa pat-5. Results of individual station showed that the highest fiber yield (3.43 t ha^-1) was recorded in BJRI Tossa pat-5 at Faridpur station.

Objectives:

To evaluate the exotic varieties of tossa jute in comparison to BJRI varieties in respect of fibre yield and yield contributing characters.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Rangpur, Faridpur, Chandina and Dinajpur research stations of BJRI during 2013 with BJRI varieties namely O-9897,BJRI Tossa pat-4, BJRI Tossa pat-5 and exotic varieties JRO-524, JRO-7835. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications having unit plot size of 4.5 m x 3.0 m. Seeds were sown from 13 March to 25 March. Recommended dose of fertilizers was applied and intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Harvesting was done at field duration of 120 days of each plot as per experimental specification. At the time of harvesting ten sample plants were collected from each plot at random. Harvested plants of each plot were separately bundled, tagged and to leave in a heap in dry jute field for four days for defoliation. Whole plants were allowed in retting, fiber extraction and dried. The data collected on different parameters were statistically analyzed using ANOVA technique by the MSTAT-C computer package program. The mean differences among the treatments were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Rang Test .

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that growth and yield of jute varied due to varieties. It may be concluded that the BJRI varieties have the potentiality to out yield the exotic varieties.
