Genetic Diversity in Three Groups of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Divergence analysis were performed in 20 rice varieties/ lines each, from traditional cold tolerant indica, cold tolerant modern varieties/lines and japonica varieties. The study was made to observe the extent of genetic diversity within each group and to identify diverse genotypes to generate crosses that give transgressive segregant in later generations. Wide range of diversity was obtained in modern varieties/lines and in japonica varieties. Parents could he selected from different clusters for hybridization to obtain heterotic segregants.

Objectives:

To obtain the magnitude of genetic diversity among the varieties/lines within three groups of rice and (ii) classify those into clusters to select varieties/lines as prospective parents to develop transgressive segregants

Methodology:

Twenty rice varieties/lines each from three groups, namely traditional cold tolerant indica, cold tolerant modern varieties/lines and japonica varieties were used in this study. Each group was grown separately at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) experimental farm in 1987 winter season using randomized complete block design with three replications. One month old seedlings from each entry were transplanted in 4.0 m² following the spacing of 25 cm and 15 cm between rows and plants, respectively. Fertilizers were used at the rate of 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha. P and K were used as basal and N was top dressed thrice from vegetative to panicle initiation stages. Weeding was done twice during vegetative stage. No visible infestation of insect pests was observed and as such no protection measure was taken. Ten plants from each entry were randomly selected for seedling height( cm), plant height (crn), panicle number per plant, plant maturity period (days), number of fertile grain per panicle, 1000-grain weight (g) and yield per plant (g). The plot means of the characters were transformed into uncorrelated means by pivotal condensation method (Singh and Choudhury, 1977). The Mahalonobis's distance (D²) values of all the combinations for each group (10 x 19 = 190 combinations) were calculated from the transformed uncorrelated means of seven characters using the formula of Rao (1952) and Singh and Choudhury (1977). Based on the calculated D² values, the varieties/ lines were grouped into various clusters following the method suggested by Tocher (c.f. Rao, 1952).

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of the present study it may be concluded that there are less degree of variations existed in traditional varieties than the modern varieties/lines and japonica varieties. As the intracluster crosses were less heterotic parents could be selected for the development of varieties with stronger heterosis from different cluster within or among the groups
