Studies on the Improvement of Propagation Techniques of Mango (mangifera Indica L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A high degree of success in vineer grafting in mango ranging from 85% to 95% was obtained during the period from mid-April to mid-August with the highest success rate in mid-May in the Mymensingh region of Bangladesh in the year 1990. The 'stock' internodes of 3 to 9 months' old and the 'scion' of 1 to 2 months' old, depending upon the growth phases at different times of the year, showed successful graft union, although comparatively more mature stem appeared to give higher success rates than those of younger stems. Microscopic observation showed that the stock and scion tissues with the least possible woods form effective graft union quicker than those with thicker woods in the stem and indicates that grafting between younger partners are desirable.

Objectives:

Find out the success rate and the most suitable period of vineer grafting in mango,
Select the suitable age of graft partner, and
Study the development of graft union to conclude on the improvement in grafting.

Methodology:

The present experiments were Carried out in the year 1990 in the Agroforestry Germplasm Centre, Department of crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Stones from a single mango tree of a local variety were procured and sown in the month of June, 1989. Seedlings were grown in rows of 0.5 m apart in three blocks of 7m x 3m each. Grafting operations were started from mid- February of 1990 and done in the middle (14th-16th) of each month. Vineer grafting was done on 3-9 months' old internodes of 7-15 months' old stock plant. The scions from similar aged plants, with developing buds at the tips just before opening, at the internode ages of 1-2 months depending upon the growth phase, at different times of the year were used. Contscr grafting was done using similar internodes between 1.5--8 months' old internodes. The internodes of the stock and scion having diameters of approximately 8-10 mm were grafted following the standard procedures of vineer or contact grafting wherever necessary according to Kurup, Rao, Kachroo and Tata (1967). However, in the present study longer incisions of approximately 50 mm and wrapping of vineer graft union with polythene sheets were practiced. The success percentage was calculated after 1.5 months from the date of grafting when the scion stick had fully sprouted. Callus growth and cellular union at the graft union were studied following separation of the stock and scion by physical force and hand sections for microscopic observation wherever applicable. Average meteorological data on temperature, relative humidity and rainfall of the week following grafting and of the month of operations are shown with the results obtained.
