An Evaluation of Foxtail Millet (setaria Italica Beauv.) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five hundred germplasm accessions of foxtail millet were studied for variability and correlation among the yield contributing characters. High coefficient of variation was observed for number of tillers per plant ( 52.16%), grain yield per plant ( 32.00 % ) and panicle length ( 17.93 %) where as low coefficient of variation were obtained for days to maturity (4.20%) and plant height (11.97%). Grain yield per plant showed significant positive correlation with plant height, panicle Iength and days to maturity. Days to maturity however showed positive association with plant height, panicle length and number of tillers per plant.

Objectives:

The collected local and exotic germplasm were evaluated in agroclimatic condition of Joydebpur so as to observe the available variability among them and association between grain yield and yield contributing characters

Methodology:

Five hundred germplasm lines from both local and exotic sources were evaluated in the rabi season of 1987-88 at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Each line consists of non-replicated 4 row plots of 2.5m long with 30 cm distance between rows. Uniform plant distance of 8 cm within row was maintained after weeding. Fertilizers were applied @ 45:30:20 Kg/ha of N, P₂0₅ and K₂ 0 respectively. Irrigation was applied after 60 days of sowing. Observations on quantitative characters such as plant height (cm), panicle length (cm), number of tillers per plant, days to maturity and grain yield per plant (g) were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each line. The characters were used for variability study and simple correlation were calculated for possible character pairs.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the study revealed high coefficient of variation for number of tillers per plant, grain yield per plant and panicle length. The positive association of grain yield with number of tillers per plant and panicle length offered an additional advantage for selection. Thus, selection based on more number of tillers with longer panicle may be effective for high grain yield.
