Evaluation of Proso Millet Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a study with 197 germplasm accessions of prosomillet (Panicum miliaceum L.) grown under both rainfed and irrigated conditions, the coefficient of variation was found to he the highest for grain yield followed by stover yield while the same was lowest for days to flower and days to maturity. Irrigation increased the grain yield of this crop by about 1.3 times but it reduced the maturity period by 6 days. It also increased the plant height by about 5 cm. Correlation studies revealed strong association of grain yield wit h plant height, panicle length, stover yield and productive tillers under both irrigated and rainfed condition. Grain yield, however, showed positive correlation with days to maturity hut it was negative under irrigated condition. Considering the yield potentiality, maturity period and suitability to grow under both rainfed and irrigated conditions, 36 superior strains were selected for further evaluation.

Objectives:

To obtain information on the association of different yield components with their relative contribution to grain yield under two sets of environmental condition. Because very little information on these aspects is available in this crop. keeping this in view, the present investigation was undertaken

Methodology:

During the rabi season of 1988-89, 197 germplasm accessions of proso millet from different geographic regions, viz. Bangladesh, India, Japan, and France were evaluated separately under rainfed and irrigated condition at Central Research Station, BARI, Gazipur. Each of these accessions were grown in non-replicated 2-row plots, 2.5m long and 25 cm apart. One standard check 'White millet' was placed in every 21st plot for comparison. The rainfed crop received 94.4 mm rainfall during its vegetative growth stage. Five plants were randomly selected from each plot for recording observations on (i) days to flower, (ii) days to maturity, (iii) plant height, (iv) panicle length, (v) number of productive tillers/plant, (vi) 1000-grain weight, (vii) stover yield/plant and (viii) grain yield/plant. The data were subjected to statistical analysis.

Grain yield exhibited highly significant positive correlations with plant height, panicle length, productive tillers/plant and stover yield under both irrigated and rainfed conditions. The present study showed significant positive association of plant height with panicle length and stover yield. Productive tillers/plant had a negative correlation with panicle length. Hence breeding proso millet varieties with bigger panicle and more tillers/plant would be difficult. In rainfed crop, days to maturity had significant positive correlations with stover and grain yield but in irrigated crop the associations were negative. This indicated that irrigation is necessary to hasten maturity in proso millet. The inter-correlations between plant height, panicle length and stover yield were positive and significant which indicated the possibility of simultaneous improvement of these traits by single selection program. Based on superior characters, 36 strains were selected for further evaluation. These strains may be of use in the varietal improvement program in proso millet.
